cially the strongest fraternal insurance
order in the world, This inatitution
has a very good record, being now in
ite twenty+seventh year with a membership of 180,000 and a surplus or reserve fund of ‘nearly five million of
dollars. Those of our readers who
take an interest in such ‘things will
readily see that there must have been
very intelligent management to secure
results such as these: Years in business, 27; average age of members, 35
years; death rate per 1000 members, 64;
lapses per 1000 members, 62. It isin
its financial department, however, that
the Independent Foresters have broken
all records. Their rates are moderate—
neither cheap nor excessive—being calcalated to provide insurance at actual
cost, at the same time assuring stability
of rates to all members. The Order
has disbursed over~ $10,000,000-in benefits, one of the most attractive features of its policies being the payment
of one-half their face value in the
event of total disability by sickness-or
accident, and the other half without
further cost, at death.
The order has a small membership in
Nevada City and Mr. Duckworth is
here to promote its growth. We be-—

Valley Burned to the Ground,
The Horton ranch in Penn Valley
was the scene of a destructive fire on
burned to the ground:
Mrs. Horton had gone to Grass Valley to do some shopping, and during
her absence the children took some
hot ashes from the stove and thoughtlessly deposited them in some dry
grass near the house. The wind soon
set the dry grase ablaze and in a short
space of time the fire’ was burning
fiercely and rapidly approahing the
house. The children alarmed some
neighbors and with their assistance
succeeded in extinguishing the flames,
and it was thought that the fire was
out. A short time afterward, however,
the flames broke out afresh and soon
communicated to the residence, which
was totally destroyed. Neighbors from
tthe Montgomery ranch and the Creamery close by hurried to lend their aid
but could not save the house. By
hard work they managed to ‘save the
large barn, a few yards away.

Cheap Overland Rates.
Sr. Pav, Minn., July 6—The results
of the reduced rates which went into
effect on the Great Northern todey.are
awaited with considerable interest in
transcontinental railroad circles. The
schedule prevides for a first-class
round-trip rate of $45 for San Franeisco, Tacoma, Portland, Seattle, Victoria__and: Vancouver from St. Paul,
timited for recurn to August 31st. The
Great Northern declares it was impelled to make the reduction because
of the attitude of the southern transcontinential lines in making a rate that
would otherwise divert to them a large
share of the sammer travel.
