The Campbell . remarks that “this will be the at Cohn’s Candy Factory. & Two Boxes of Chewing Gum ‘and a Half Gallon of ice Cream ‘Carried Away. Eph Cohn’s candy fuctory on Commercial street was robbed last night but the plunder carried off was a very slight compensation to the thieves for the amo of labor they performed in effecting an entrance to the place. A hole was cut through the floor of the apartment used as an ice cream parlor, the burglars getting under the building by going through the flume that runs beneath it. With an. augur they bored holes until the pieces of) board removed left an opening something over a foot square, through which it was easy fora person to make his entrance. The linvleum on the floor was not bored through, but was cut with a knife and turned back. When Cohn opened his place of business this 4 morning he did not at first notice that “ anything was wrong, as the linoleum had been turned back over the wee . in the floor. After‘discovering that the place had been entered he looked around to learn what had been stolen. Two large boxes full of chewing gum and about a half gallon of ice cream had disappeared. The money drawer had been broken open and twenty cents stolen. This was the extent of the robbery as far as could be ascertained. The kitchen had been thorougly ransacked in the search for money or valuables. The thieves are evidently gum chewers and will have a whole year’s supply. What was done with the two quarts of ice cream is not known, but that amount would have been sufficient for six or eight persons. Maybe there was a picnic somewhere between 12 o’clock last night and daylight this morning. Cohn was busy making candy last night and did not close his place till about midnight. The officers are working on the case, but so far have found no clue that points to the guilty parties. A SERIOUS ACCIDENT, A Well-Known Young Man Suffers the Loss of Part of One Arm. The Marysville Democrat says: At Strawberry Valley Monday afternoon, while firing a salute with giaut powder cartridges, Edwin De Forest Drake, son of James H. Drake, the well-known merchant of that place, was seriously injured. The explosion occurred 1n such a way that the left hand and wrist was badly shattered, necessitating amputation of the lower part of the arm. A physician was brought from La Porte as soon as possible, and after the amputation the young man was made as comfortable as possible. When the stage came down he was resting easy, and appeared to be doing as well as could be expected. Colors and Complexion. It is sarprising how few women consider whether the colors they wear are snited to their own particular complexion or not. Not long since the stylish color was that rich purple hue known as petunia,. and petunia was forthwith massed on the hats and bonnets of blond pf much rejoicing on the part of. and brunette alike. Yet it is possible to be dressed well and becomingly at the same time by’a little study of solor in conjunction with one’s personal yppezrance. Any woman who studies ‘fect will see that the color which in -ensifies the color of her eyes is the one vhich is the most hecoming every time. ‘Pale blue and pink should be carefuly avoided by women with red hair, as they exaggerate rather than soften the agtaral colori ug, but they will never make apy mistake with the dark shades of brown, especially the red brown. Brown is also the color of a brown eyed woman, as it will bring out the beauty of her eyes as no other color can if she put chooses the right shade. Gray is hecoming to women with gray hair and to young women who have gray eyes and lovely complexions, old or yonng, provided she selects the right tint. The blond cun wear pure white, without a tinge of yellow or pink in it, but the brunette must be-careful to wear the soft cream shades. And if she wears black at all it must be very glossy, while a pronounced blond can safely deck herself ‘in the dull black which is used for mourning. Green is pretty sure to be suitéble to every complexion, providing one is fortunate enough to discover the particular shade which harmonizes best that green is the leading color this season, especially the strong, dark shades of metallic green. —Boston Traveller. This was shown by the 90 mile ride{ of the famous Seventh.during the Indian war at Pine Ridge agency in 1890, when they came to the rescue of a company of white soldiers who were surrounded “and in danger of being cut off by the Indians. These colored cavalrymen cannot only do the work when it comes to the trial, but have a happy faculty of keeping in good humor, always laughing and chattering and as happy as children. That the life of a colored trooper is satisfactory is évidenced by the fact that fully onehalf re-enlist after the first three years’ enlistment expires. Many people have the impressioz that when a man fails in everything else he can at least assure himseli that he may join the United States army as a last: resort to keep alive But the requirements are such that but few applicants suctessfully pass the examination. _ The .candidate must be unmarried, between the ages of 21-and 30, possess.a fair edu: cation, pass a strict physical exami“gation and bring recommendations as to his moral character. During July the Chicago recruiting statiox accepted only 430 applications. oui of 3,363. candidates who were willing to share the lot of a private soldier. The army is no longer. a place of refuge where a man who has losi all hope and ambition may bury, himself from the rest of the world. The private who is ambitious has a future here as well as in any othe1 occupation, for promotions are made from the ranks. In July of each yea competitive examinations are held. Those who successfully pass the ex. amination are placed on the list for promotions. Should a colored man who desires to enter the cavalry successfully pass the examinations at a recruiting station, he would be assigned to one of the cavalry posts in the west. ~—Indianapoiis Journal. of this city. In 1875 he went to Virginia City and opened a dental office, whére he followed his profession until about two years ago, making frequent visits to his home at this city. _Dr. Chapman was a man of exemplary habits, straightforward and punctualin all dealings, and of a genial, good-natured disposition that made him friends wherever he went. In 1861 he married Miss Nellie E. Pooler of this city. His wife and two sons}~ survive him, Dr.’C. W. Chapman living in this city and Dr. 8. A. Chapman at Virginia City.~He was a member of Nevada Lodge of Masons and of Nevada. Deceased was also a member.of the American Legion of Honor, being a charter member of the Council in this city. To Brand Female Seals. Dr. Jordan'of Stanford University is at Seattle on his way to the sealing grounds. His idea is to have the female seals branded a foot square by an electric, painless process, so as_to. destroy the value of their skins and thus save: them from those vandals who are yearly destroying the seal fisheries, which are so valuable to our country. Recognizing the Mistake. The Populists are generally recognizing the mistake they made last fall in allowing themselves to be hoodwinked by the Democrats and don’t propose to do it again. — Seal Tuer editor of a Kansas newspaper says: “We drank about 30,000,000 gallons Jess whisky last year than usual.” The editor must have moved from Kentucky the year before last.
