JULY 9, 1904 _ £2-ta2e Per Week ciaeenasnaaiinaiataah To Be Inaugurated March 4,.1905: THEODORE ROOSEVELT FOR VICE-PRESIDENT, Warren Fairbanks. A GRAND ORATION monstiel loved liberty less, had they not been’ of jilie kisi people that they were, they would have péitiently continued to submit to the yokes so mercilessly put upon their unwilling necks. Not so our Forefathers! Not so the Puritan! Not so the people of the Mayflower.-Not-so the Miles.Standishes, the Benjamin Franklins, the Thomas Jeffersons! Not so the Charles Carrolls, the Ethan Allens, the Patrick Henrys! Not so the Lees, the Adamses, the Morrisses, the Lafayettes, the Steubens, the Hamiltons, the Washingtons! Not so the millions of other and unnamed men and women, heroes everyone, who freely offered all they had, even to life itself, upon the altar of their country! Had they not been what they were, this celebration would not be now in progress, and Liberty would still.,be fretting at the clanking ‘chains that once proclaimed her bond-servant of despotic power! ; : “It is well that the American people should annually assemble to celebrate the deeds and memories of the great fore. fathers of the Republic, to fan into fiercer flames the fires upon the altars of our country, to teach the young those lessons of patriotism that all should know by heart. For no nation can long be free, and no nation ought long to be free that does not treasure in its heart of hearts the memories of those whose self-sacrifices gave it liberty and independence.” In concluding a beautiful tribute of praise to the memory of George Washington, Gov. Pardee said: “Our country’s marvelous growth, from the three millions of a century ago to the eighty millions of today; our unparalleled expansion from the narrow strip along the Atlantic shore to the present spanning of a continent and over Seas; our magnificent and quickly acquired premiership in manufactures, wealth and commerce; our strides in the arts and sciences; our early-secured and easily maintained priority in the diffusion of knowledge, through our public schools and great universities—all these things have proven true Berkeley’s prophetic dictum, “‘Westward the course of empire takes its way.” May the star that marks its ever-westward course hover long above our land! And may our people, as has ever been their good fortune, find always new Washingtons, Franklins, Jeffersons, Hamiltons to lead them safely through the crises which the future may provide! Monday—Independence Day—at the World’s () Fair in St. Louis, Governor Geo. C. Pardee of California delivered an exceptionally fine Fourth of July oration, which must have greatly impressed the large multitude of people who enjoyed the pleasure of hearing“it given by such an eloquent and magnetic speaker, and will without doubt prove to be one of the most valuable and remunerative expositions of our State’s great progress and development, along intellectual and industrial lines, that the Golden West has ever received and benefited by. At no time have people assembled from all over the world listened to a more brilliant, inspiring and patriotic address, and every true and loyal American citizen who has the opportunity should read it carefully. We greatly regret that we are unable to publish in full the Governor’s oration, owing to lack of space, but we give a few excerpts below which will prove valuable and interesting reading. Gov. Pardee said in part: “I bring you a message of peace, good will and loyalty from the million and three-quarters of my people, who, on the far-off Pacific Coast, under the genial California sun, are, like us, celebrating with becoming and befitting ceremonies, the 128th anniversary of the declaration of our national independence. They bid me say to you, the representatives of the states and territories here assembled, that they, like us, are renewing their pledges of fealty to our common country, and are offering up their prayers to the Ever—Living God for the preservation and perpetuity of the nation we love so well. To the accompaniment of the whisper of the great ocean that sends its surges murmuring on our western continental shores, my people of California are praying that neither the lapse of time, the ruthless hand of ignorance nor the devastations of war may ever lay waste or destroy this fair land which is our common heritage; and that if, in the inscrutable wisdom of God, it shall be His will that other nations shall not escape the unsparing ravages gf barbarous forces, our . land and our people may be graciously spared from further . visitations of His wrath.
