Notwithstanding the activity in mining in this district there are many

battery.—Marysville Appeal.
In saying this, which we-do not propose to dispute, the Appeal is simply
seeking to justify itself for questioning Sheriff Getchell’s course in pronouncing the robbery story of hotel
elerk Kavanagh of this city a fake. By
of the grounds upon which his concontemporary, and after a careful and
unprejudiced reading of the same it
will doubtless be willing to admit that
it has done him an injustice, What
the Appeal has said heretofore condemnatory of the officer has clearly
been based on a misapprehension 9f
the facts, and now that it has been
placed in possession of the circumstantes it will no doubt. be quick to
do the fair thing by admitting its
error. In this Kavanagh case, as in all
his other official acts, Sheriff Getchell
has shown himself to bea keen, fearless
and conscientious officer.

Inspecting the Express Offices,
Route Agent Tucker was intown yesterday. He is making his regular tour
of inspection of the offices of Wells
Fargo & Oo. in this part of, the State’:
He ‘found the Nevada City office in
perfect. condition as is to be expected
with “Budge” Tower at the helm, and
today continued his journey northward,
taking the outgoing Sierra county stage.
If a highwayman should stand up that
stage with Major Tucker aboard, he
would be able to turn in an’ original
and interesting report at headquarters,
unless he should be rash enough to
to try and get away with the bandit.
The chances are that in the latter event
the Major himself would be turned in
at said headquarters. The average
Nevada county stage robber is no respecter of persons.
