The preliminary examination of
James Rodda, charged. with assault to
murder, in shooting Robert Crase at
Boston Ravine, Grass Valley, last
week, was concluded in Justice Mulroy’s court, Grass Valley, yesterday,
and the Judge took the cate uindér adand white; that the Union be

Union one star be added to the Union of the flag; and that
‘such addition take effect on the fourth day of July next sucSince 1818 star after star has
been added as State after State has been added to the Union,
until we now number forty-five in all.
The American Flag Association was formed in 1897, of
Flag Committees from veteran, military, patriotic and historical societies in the United States,.and also of patriotic citizens, to promote reverence for and prevent the desecration of
the Flag of our Country. The good work undertaken by
this association has grown and spread rapidly from year to
year until now “Flag Day” is given proper recognition and
generally celebrated all over the United States, -and particularly by the public schools, although Sabbath schools, private schools and many patriotic American secieties are also
beginning to interest themselves in this movement.
We should like to see all the public schools of the State,
and especially those of Nevada City unite in conducting the

HE AMERICAN FLAG ASSOCIATION has again
_* issued ‘an official circular, calling the attention of
» “all American citizens, young and old, to the approach
of “Flag Day,” June 14th, 1902, in which it makes
-éarhest solicitation for a far more general and enthusiastic,
celebration than any yet witnessed. 3
The 14th of June has come to be called “Flag Day” by
the patriotic citizens of this country, because on that date,
‘in 1777, Congress enacted: “That the flag of the thirteen
United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white;,
that the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” :
States the number of stripes were increased, and then
dawned upon our fathers the certain future expansion of our
country, and the original thirteen stripes were unchangeably
restored on April 4, 1818, when it was enacted by Congress:
“That from and after the fourth day of July next, the flag of
the United States be thirteen horizontal stripes, alternate red .

the matter came up this morning, Juttice Mulroy held the defendant te
answer before the Superidr Court, and
fixed the bonds at $1500, Rodda was

East have a little better advantage in this regard than the Gay
public schools of California, as the close of the school term
is a month later. In this State, asa general rule, the schools
have closed for the summer vacation before Flag Day arrives.
This, however, should be no barrier to the observance of the
day, and we urge the adoption of this patrotic practice
among the children of our city. Let us be grateful and thus
express our gratitude at the hopeful omen for the future of
our American institutions, that the generation of youth now
fitting for usefulness will be a generation school in patriotism

We earnestly exhort our citizens to join in making the
