~ San MOREE + Sais ‘ 1968,
Dear Eprror Transont—Iobserve
. in yonr good paper an item about an
‘“oldtimer” reminding me that maybe
4 few lines from a former old Nevada
county man might not prove unacceptible te you.
It is years. since I left your county,
where I was almost raised. I leok
back to it as the ‘green spot” of: my
life, an oasis one meets, or thinks of,
or looks back upon, as a traveler in
the great Sahara Desert. 1 frequently
meet former residents of Nevada county here who revert to their old days
‘there—one and all wish the return of
them, but that is nct to be.
In my going in and about this city
'I see B. J. Watson, once Senator from
your county, and now in the employ}.
of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company.
Billy Evens, in the empley: of Wells,
Fargo & Co, at Nevada City, when A;
D. Tower was agent, is to be seen occasionally, but is very feeble.
Geo. E. Robinson, former Treasurer
of Nevada county, is traveling agent
for Bowen & Oo., the seed men.
H. Geldmacher, cattle and hog drover years ago, is here and well fixed.
Young in feeling and out of business.
Henry Cull, at one time livery ‘stabie keeper at North San Juan, and
James O, Sharp, an old: resident of the
same place, is.a trusted empleye of a
bank, are here,
Jas. A. Stidger is practicing law
here. Hehas nice offices in Montgomery Block, and seems to be doing
well, .
Hon. O. W. Cross, ex-Senator of Nevada county, is here and has a very
large practice.
Geo. L. Hughes, a former resident of
your. city, is in the Attorney General’s.
office, and is engaged in prosecuting
State claims against divers parties,
Harry Bubring, formerly of North
San Juan, is in businegs here.
Ihear that one of the Rosenberg
Bros., formerly of your city, has made
an immense fortune in Guatemala.
O. P. Stidger, born and raised in
North San Juan, has a — law practice here.
Jolly John Pattison, ex-Aesemblyman and ex-Oounty Clerk of Nevada
county, is here and avery busy man.
He is the same old “‘Pat,” and highly
esteemed by every one that knows
him. His good qualities are lasting.
Then there is A. Blumenthal, formerly a merchant of your city. He is
a retired capitalist and is taking life
very easy.
The streets of San Francisco are full
of Nevada county people, and in fature
letters I will have lots to say. about
them.
Now I’want to talk alittle about
politics, The pet is “biling” here.
Mayor Schmitz foolishly believes that
it is foreordained that he should be
the next Governor of California ; that
he will be elected United States Senator to suceeed Geo. ©. Perkins, and
resign the Governorship ; that then he
would be in line to succeed President
Roosevelt. Alf Ruef is the trainer,
and if Schmitz follows his advice he
will later on be numbered among the
political dead ducks, so to speak. If,
on the other hand, he shows the sense
of even a leuse, he will stick to the
Mayorship of San Francisco, where he
can do the most good fer these who ele
ted bim to that office. He has nomore
‘show of receiving the Republican. somination for Governor than Sam Leake,
the leading Democrat in the State,
and who is the editor ef the Call, which
claims to be a Republiean paper !
By the way, I have met men from
all parts of the State and they tell me
that the attacks on Governor Gage by
the Call and Obronicle are proving the
worst kind of boomerangs. They regard it as a personal quarrel, and pablic sentiment is with Gage.
Leake, Spreckles and de Young hope
to make Preston the Republican nominee for Governor, but he has no more
show than Tom Fiint, who is hardly
talked of now.
A great question as to “Who were
the parties who met in the Palace grill
Lroom and érranged the assault upon
Mr. Garratt, of the Post,” is still agitating the public mind, It is said they
are known and that one of the aesaseins will soon: expose the prominent
men who put up the joband furnished
the money to carry out the cowardly
business. It is said the assassing received instructions ‘not to kill Garrett, but cripple him.” It will startle
the people when they learn the true
. . names of the instigators of the grea
erime, and the cause thereof.
