HE address of General Joh B. Gordon to the Confederates at New Orleans was tuned to the highest pitch _of patriotism. It was a notable utterance in t wo aswwENe pects—its mellow, temperate and philosophic view of the past and its high, hopeful, patriotic look forward to the future. This patagraph, which epitomizes the sentiment of . the address, breathes a spirit _ can be appreciated as fully in Maine as in Georgia: “We will not indulge on this centennial—this political millenial morning—nor at other times in any bitterness. We feéknone. We pity those who do. We have long since drawn the curtain of oblivion over the regretful and unseemly things of the past, and we cherish as Americans the _,walor and noble deeds of both armies and_ofall sections. We are satisfied with our record, and the power that would attempt to make us blush for it would be both stupid and blind. Weare heirs, joint heirs, with the Republic’s-children in the inheritance of freedom left by our sires. We are proud of all the past. Moreover, we -are now facing a future pregnant with tremendous possibilities, but we face it with a strength of hope and assurance born of an unswerv— ing purpose to diacharge our every duty to all races and to the whole country.” Shortly the Grand Army of the Republic will meet in San Francisco for the annual re-union, and we confidently expect to see the addresses delivered there to be keyed to the same high patriotic note sounded by the Confederate chieftain. There is talk of the veterans of both arnties fraternizing-on-that-occasion-more-freely and cordially than-ever-before, though they have long met ‘and mingled in a spirit of generous ainity, and on many occasions have jointly figured _in public demonstrations. The country has had its baptism of bleed, and from it the nation has received a-nobler, purer} faith,-a broader and imore_enduring patriotism.. In the directory published. in the'. found historical sketches of the Queen City of the Sierra and ‘surrounding esting to many of our readers. Following is a brief review and continua'tion_ of excepts, which wm be ee Daring the war of thes rebellion no . town in the United States was more earnest for the right than Nevada. Her people were boid. and staunch adherent of the Government in every emergency, nine votes out of every ten for the party supporting the integrity of the Nation, and contributing to the Sanitary Fund qith great liberality. When the cloude of war began to gather, the patriotism of her peopie became intense. In times of peace little notice wae taken of the 4th of July, but, when the Nation was threatened Nevada celebrated the day in 1861 with a feeling that showed .the depth of her feeling. It was the first time the National Anniversary was observed in becoming stylein the place. Soldiers’ Aid Societies were formed in the town, as soon ag an appeal was made, and the ladies assembled collecting and making lint and bandages, which were sent to the seat of war. When disaster came upon the Union forces, there was gloom depicted upon the faces of almost every citizen, and many a spell of sadness was experienced during all that long end cruel war. How hopes were elated and.depressed! Sometimes the heart of the patriot almost gave way to despair; but how wild was the enthusiasm when we could see and feel triumph in the closing bourse of the conflict. The cap‘ture of Vicksburg and Port Hudeon, and the opening of the Missiasippi, and the result of the battle of Gettysbarg, almost drove Nevadans mad with joy, but the delirium of the moment when it was announced that Richmond, the rebel capital, had fellen,; was never equalled inthe Sierra Ne-. vadas. But soon again was the joy of. . the people changed to the most poignant grief; Abraham Lincoln, the beloved of the Nation, fell by the hand of an assassin. The city was draped in mourning and sorrow settled I‘ke a pall upon patriotic Nevadas A fire broke out on the site. of Stumpf’s Hotel, on Broad street, in heart of the tows again in ashes. The ground before the flames had gained any-headway, bat, from some ageertained cause, the water did not come with force enough to throw upon the burning buildings. The fire quickly crossed Broad street, and through negligence of the Obief Engineer of the no efficient stand was made on the line of Pine street, The fire was thus enabled to cross Pine street, consuming the lower part of the town, which might have been saved by efficient management. A few men took their stand by the hydrant at the corner of Commercis! and Pine streets, and with a piece of hose succeeded in Pine street all the way from Broad street to the street in front of the courthouze. That part of Pine street between Broad and Spring, was much easier defended, but the fire. was allowed to cross and to consume the beat part of thetown. Let it pass into histime, when his services were needed, was engaged in saving the duds of his etrumpet. The courthouse again fell a prey to the devouring element, and every hotel in the place, Perhaps the fire was a good dgent in theend, for to it we owe in great measure the aplendid hoteles and theater, and the magnificent courthouse, which is perbape the finest structure of ite kind in the State. Itis built, the lower story of granite and upper of brick, gant a granite jail contigaous, in a yard set with trees, and cost more ae fifty thousand dollars. It is a higbly ornamental object, besides being well adapted to the purposes for which it was built. It was finished in the autumn of 1864, from architectural designe furnished by Batier of San Francisco. The fire passed over nearly the same grounds as fn 1856 and 1858, de-' ». etroying the Methodist, tional, Episcopal sad elk ples eae es, the gas works and theater, and ruining many brick buildings as well}ae sll the wooden ones but two in the whole territory traversed by the flames. The entire lose was estimated at $600,000. The Baptist church was the only edifice of ite kind left, pers this was used as a until « cupation, In the way of hotels, Nevada oba the pablic were great gainers by the fire, The Union Hotel is one of the best piven: buildings for hotel pyr-. RI ESCAPE, Se ee Wiliam Grifths Takes a Header From ‘Suspension Bridge. William Grifhths, an apprentice at Giffin’s cigar factory, and son of Grif Griffiths of Piety Hill, came very near being chronicled as a Suspension Prilige victim, and his experience onld prove as a warning to others that they cannot be too careful in traversing the dangerous and rickety old superstructure left standing for the eonvenience of the workmen engeged in erecting the new bridge. Mr. Griffiths in going across this morning attempted to pase another pedestrian coming in the opposite direction, and ‘in so doing stepped to one side in order to give the other man free passage way. In stepping he misjudged the terrafirma space and stepped on the edge of the plank, lost his balance and fell to the bottom of the chasm, a distance of fifteen, feet at the end where he fell, As hie lucky star was in the ascendant just then he turned a few somersaults and landed plumb upon}. his pedal extremities. Outside of receiving a‘severe jolt from his drop he was not hurt a particle and in a few minutes regained his composure saffloently to resume his journey. It was a miraculous escape from serious injary or death. WHL START UD 500m . Dredg ging ate Jones Bar To Gommenee About duly ist. A. O.
