» THE SHARON CASE.
It would be a matter of wonder
if California did not gain a reputation for looseness and meanness if
there were many such cases
as the one which is named at the.
head of this article. Itis hard to
determine which is the most repulsive, the conduct of the hoaryheaded. libertine, who is sued, or
the eccentric adventuress who sues
Fim, or of some of the counsel in
-. thecase. The details of the former intercourse between Shaton
~gnd Sarah Althea are too coarse
for reproduction by respectable
papers. The trial was noted for perjuries, rank as dung-heaps; one
side contending the documentary
_ evidence of the other was a tissue
-_ 6f forgeries, and the Judge ford
~ that the woman, in whose favor he’
decided, was guilty of both perjury and forgery. Among the law~-yers, one side put up a successful
job to rob Sharon of $25,000 by
selling to him a forged contract ; the
other side deliberately set to work
to corrupt a confidential clerk and
buy testimony. When the fair
adversary of Sharon was put in
jail for contempt of the Circuit
Court she blurted out in the cor1idor that one of her lawyers was
to blame for all her troubles. That
lawyer has worked like a slave for
her, and’ gained. more _notorietythan profit for his pains, but stands
Sarah Althea’s abuse in hopes of:
. Sharing Sharon’s plunder. With
it allthere is a well-founded’ apprehension that the woman may
kill the man who formerly hed
her favors; wéll-founded, because
she speaks publicly of the prob‘ability of her doing it, and appears capable of any resolute ac. tion.
It is a social misfo june “when
such miserable affairs become}
public. The young are pervert. ed, an unwholesome craving ‘for
-— sensation-is--stimulated, andthe
__ good name of the State is defiled.
oe
id
to Sen Francisco, that while Sharon’s conduct is generally despised
and condemned,no one scarcely believe the alleged marriage to have
ever been contracted, but the general impression was that-he had
fallen into the hands of a clever ad-venturess, who had laid a plot to
en sap him, ane ae he had
out of which mie : fad it difficult.

In Memoriam.
At a meeting of Hydraulic Parlor, No. 56, N. S. G, W., held
Wednesday evening, April 8th,
1885,the following resolutions were
vnanimously adopted:
Whereas, The Supreme President of the Universe has summoned our beloved brother, John A.
McQuesten, in the dawn of man~hood, to a membership in the
Grand Parlor above, we who remain deeply deplore.his untimely
end, and humbly bow in submission to the edict of him who doeth
all things well;
Whereas, {tis fitiing that we
pay this tribute to his memory:
Resolved, That we will ever
cherish the memory of ou~ departed brother, trusting that the sorrows of earth may be assuaged by
the hope of a glorious meeting
hereafter in the spirit-world,where
friends and k*ndred meet and part
no more; _
Resolved, That we tender our
heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing relations ;
Resolved, That the charter of
this Parlor be draped in mourning
be, for the space of sixty days;
Resolved, That a copy of these
resolutions be sent to the family
of our deceased brother, and these .
resolutions be spread upon the
minutes of this Parlor. :
