Try it. j9-2t ‘The great majority of our people are in favor of having some kind of a celebration here on the Fourth of July. The pupils of the public schools are preparing for the closing exercises, which take place the latter part of this month. We carry all the popular brands of case goods and W. H. 'McBrayer’s CrparBrooxk whisky, the finest made in} ji-+ty America, at the “Owt Satoon.” An indicator has been put in at the fire house of Pennsylvania Engine Co., No. 2, on Broad street, to show the number of the box from which au alarm is sent in. George M. Hughes, the contractor, is rashing the work ahead on the two dwelling houses that he is erecting ‘for Antone Folino on Factory street. Both frames are about. up. Go to “THE OWL,” corner Commercial and Pine streets, near the Court House, for sharp, cool steam beer at 5 cents a glass ‘or any plain’ or mixed drink at 10 cents. jl-lw” The City Trustees have been in session several evenings as a Board ot Equalization. Many assessments have been raised a little; and in the aggregate the increase will amount to considerable. « There have ybeen more Indians in town this w They come from Nevada, Placer, Yuba and Butte counties, and are here to attend the murder trial of Frank Johnson for killing William Geatge. ». Next Thursday evening~the Delta Epsilon Quartette from: Berkeley wil! givé.a concert at the Congregational Church in this city. ‘They are -excél-Jent vocalists and Sk cntreniaeeists. ‘A FOOTHILL PRUN PRUNE ORCHARD “Uncle Biliy” Smith Su Successfully Grow“ing the Sucé-Jent Fruit. Wm. H. Smith ofthis city 1s demonstrating in a practical way that prunes can be successfully grown “here in the foothills. His five year old orchard of; D’Agens which lies about four miles to the west of the county seat, near the South Yuba: river, contains over 2000 of as. healthy, productive trees of their age as are to be found throughont the length and breadth of the Staté. While in the Santa Clara valley and other sections where a specialty is made of this fruit, the crop is an almost total failure. this season, the Smith orchard withstood the north winds and generally unfavorable weather of last spring. Many of the trees are heavily loaded, and few if any of them are entirely barren. The crop will be fully up to an average one for five year old trees. The land has & southerly exposure, the soil is deep, and the altitute is 350 feet lower than that of Nevada City. The trees have never been irrigated, but a systematic and thorough ‘systeniof cultivation has been pursued from the beginning. The trees branch within a foot of the ground, and so far it has not been found necessary to top _ OF thin out the growth. Everything now indicates that within two years at the outside the tree will ‘ have attained a productiveness that will render them highly profitable in return for the money and labor expended in their plauting and care. Prorect YOURSELF against sickness and suffering by keeping your blood rich and pure with Hood’s Sarsaparilla. Weak, thin, impure, blood is sure to result in disease, Hoop’s PILLS are easy to take, easy to operate. Cure indigestion, bitiousness, 25c. ~ “Summer Goods. During the heated term you can find comfort and ease by lying in a hammock in the shade and eating ice cream made in the Wonder Five Minute Ice Cream Freezer. Integrity Being Unassaifhble. “*I-never took to a man as I did to Hank Staffer. He moved in here without makin no noise about it, and they hain’t no better neighbor in th’ county.’ ~~ It was Farmer Waddy that was doing the talking, and the squire of the township only interrnpted to ask whether the farmer had ever missed any chickens or shotes'before Hank settled in the yicinity. “No, I never did,’’ admitted Waddy, “but I never lost nuthin of th’ kind afore you got that new man of yours. (d trust Hank Stuffer with my life, ‘*Den’t be too confidin,’” insisted. the squire.. “‘Many’s th’ apple I’ve seen that locked perfec’ on th’ outside, but was rotten at th’ core. Hank seems all right, bat I wouldn’t be surprised no day to see him fetched up afore me. Things hain’t right in this communerty since he jined it,”““That’s so, but there’s a million things -happened. outside of. Hank’s comin. His. folks couldn’t eat all th’ nuthin. *’ **Watch him,” insisted the squire. And ‘he tcck his leave with a fine imi‘morals ef the entire. neighborhood.Farmer Waddy did watch, ard he hired cthers to help him: watch. ~ If this were fiction, it would be the squire or his new man who was trapped. But truth is an exacting worthless fellow living in a log ‘hermitage that was doing all the stealing. It hasn’t*the slightest bearing on the case “Now, if the baker sends us a loaf of stale bread,’’ said the old soldier, “we send it back. But, dear me, we didn’t often do anything of that.sort in the army. We didn’t get very much soft bread anyway—that is, regular bread. sometimes called hard tack—a kind of cracker, like soda cracker in shape, and not unlike it in appearance, but thicker. And hard bread of gocd quality and not more than a month old wasn’t bad: In fact,-it” was. very. good: © It was only when we got some that was very old,, and that had foreign creaturés boring in it, so that you had to knock it agaist something before eating it, that anybody growled; and even: then we rarély,sent it back. Sometimes if it was very-bad the reginiental. quartermaster would . send back the whole lot and draw -new it he could. But oftener we kept it, and . you could throw ‘it away if you wanted to, but that was all. + “Still, our outdeor life was conducive to good appetites, arid afterall one could have’ a poorer. breakfast than moldy, hard-bread and cofiee,~ For instance, nothing.”’—New_ York Sun. ai A Limited Monareby.
