AN Up-to-Date City.
N EASTERN GENTLEMAN, who has traveled considerably over, California since his arrival in this
State, recently came to Nevada City and spoke many
flattering words for the prosperity of out mountain
city and the enterprise of its people. Among other things
of a complimentary nature which he said in the hearing of
a TRANSCRIPT reporter, whose business occupation the gentleman had“tiot. been informed of, was this:
“Since coming to California I have traveled extensively
over the State and visited about all‘the principal towns, making a careful note of the present condition and future outlook of each place. Asa general rule, every interior town
in the State has awakened to the great possibilities which
lies before it, a Chamber of Commerce or a Board of Trade. i
has been organized and active work commenced for development* and progress, and the future of all places look very
promising and encoaraging. But I will say this for Nevada
City, which is true, for I do not believe in unmerited praise.
Without exception your city is the most progressive I have
seen for its size, and some of the recent improvements made
to your resident part of the town reminds me very forcibly
of those employed in many of our Eastern cities, as they
are up-to-date, attractive and of a permanent character. I
refer to the discarding of wooden sidewalks and fences and
substitution of clean cement pavement and coping in their
places, the pretty lawns: and hedges, the modern ‘ideas
and architectural beauty employed in the erection of new
residences and the remodeling of others, and so on. One
thing especially I have noticed for which due credit should
be given, and that is the pleasing absence of the disagreeable
‘knockers’ so numerous in-other places.” [Here the reporter
could not help exclaiming: “Thank God for that!] Con_ tinuing, the gentleman said: ‘Your people all look confident
happy and prosperous, and there is no reason whatever why
your-city, with its specially favored and vast miaeral resources at hand, your agricultural and fruit-raising advantages, your energetic Chamber of Commerce and co-operative dnd progressive people, should not become the largest
and most prosperous interior city in Northern California.”

Feminine Ingenuity.
HREE WOMEN got out of the New York State Reformatory a few days ago, and though the keepers
are reticient about it, it is said that the women picked
the lock with a fork, and thus made their escape. If
this be so, it is good reason enough why the authorities
hould not want to talk. Any institution intended to keep
people from getting out, which has locks that can be opened
by a woman with a fork, ought to be shrouded in silence for
the present.
Otherwise there is nothing so very surprising in the incident. The crowning characteristic of woman, some people
think, is her ability to get results with implements not intended for the purpose to which she applies them. Doubtless
oné reason why the women in penal institutions are required
to wear their hair short is that there is no known thing that
a woman cannot do with a hairpin. If this precaution had
been neglected, all the inmates of the New York reformatory
would probably now be roving wild and free, because they
would have used their hairpins for keys.
A woman can drive nails with a flatiron, a brick, a stone,
a stove-lifter, or the heel ef her. slipper; and she can take
tacks out of acarpet with the handle of an iron spoon or the
back of a knife-blade. The only objection to a woman being
a carpenter would probably be that she would never use the
proper tool when the wrong one happened to be nearer, and
so there would be no prestige about her. We all know that
prestige: is one of the great money-making agents of the
world, and it is irrevocably ruined when the mechanic admits that anything but the very best tools will do for the
work he has in hand.
This is a matter for the woman’s rights associations to
for their work,-and get them. This will make household
labor more dignified, but it will also make it considerably

Simply a Nuisanee.
The locust trees around town are
positively a nuisance. Yesterday afternoon when a light wind was blowing the blossoms falling from the trees
made it appear as if there wasa driving snowstorm. The refuse covered
lots and even flew into residences
making it very) disagreeable. Last
year a number of locust trees around
town were cut down and elms and
other shade trees planted in their
stead. Every locust in town should
be cut down.
