Pen Picture of Preston.
In regard to the statement in the San
Francisco papers, that Spreckels’ has decided to support Col. Preston of San Mateo
for the Gubernatorial nomination, a gentleman who is well posted on the true inwardness of San Francisco pélitics says: “It
is an open secret. that both Spreckels and
Burns favor the nomination. of Preston.
The latter’s friends don’t ‘blow’ like those
of other candidates, but. they know that
when it comes to the test that these leaders
will throw their influence for Col. Preston.
It was said long ago that Burns’ support
of Estee was only a ruse to keep Coombs in
the background and that’his real choice was
not yet publicly announced. This is no
doubt true and-his choice beyond doubtis

Preston’s nomination is another question,
It will no doubt help a great deal.
“Col. Preston himself is a
manding presence and said to be a millionaire. He owns some of the most valuable
land in San Mateo county and is one of the
most prominent lawyers in San Francisco.
He. is the attorney for the Crocker and
other millionaire estates. In person he
is of a ruddy complexion, nearly six feet
high and must weigh over 200 pounds. His
expression is one of those that captures his
auditors from the start and in a big convention he will make’ scores of votes. by the
sheer magnetism of the man.”

A Bride For a Month.
‘John Welsh, the well-known Salvationist
who resides at Colfax, was married a month
ago to a Nebraska widow. Things went
alorg nicely (apparently to John) and he
was the happiest man in the Army’s ranks,
Bat now his head is hung low . with sorrow
as his better-half has taken her personal
effects and left for pastures new, not even informing John of her sudden departure.
When Le arrived home from work a few
days ago he. found that his bride had departed. The cause of the desertion is unknown.

Early, in the brightness of the morning,
the crowd came thronging through the
green-bordered roadways of the Park
to the gates of the great Exposition. They
came in scores first, and then in hundreds,
and contained bas-reliefs of the originators
of this popular sport; the second represented
the Muses, under the protection of Germania; the third, Viticulture and beer-brewing; the fourth represented peasant girls
engaged in spinning, churning and milkingthe fifth represented inventions and disthrones surmounted with Germania, Columbia and Eureka. At times the crowd was
dense—some ejaculated, ‘Grand !’’ and
others said, “‘O Lord . ” <
It was a jolly crowd and the air seemed
laden with sociability, Over all blazed the
radiant sun of California; over. all bung the
glamour of prosperity. The golden splendor of Sunset City was asserting itself to
the good-natured German. Within this
radius California has all displayed—the
wealth of her southern groves, the ‘metal of
her hills and gulches. The wheat, the
flowers, the grapes, the wine; the untold
bounteous gifts of nature; the tumbling: cat‘man of com. aract of gifts that Providence has showered . i

Found a Ledge.
Telegraph: Not long ago Mr. Davis found
& quartz ledge upon his place several miles
from here and not very far from Lime
Kiln. Mr. Davis was engaged in digging
holes for posts when he suddenly came
across a stringer of quartz and following it
+ . 4 little ways he found a ledge about three
*. feet in thickness and pieces of the rock
which he broke showed free gold. Mr.
Davis knows more about horses and cattle
than he does about mining and he says he
does not know what he is going to do with
the ledge.
For some time: past parties have been
working a ledge near Dawson Handy’s
ranch, below the Lime Kiln. The pros
pects have been very encouraging, so much
in fact, that they are erecting a five-stamp
mill upon the property. The gentlemen
who are operating the mine are from Oakland. Our iuformant says that in the
course of a few months they expect to add
five more stampa to the mill. i
