No effort was made to follow them until day light. The outlaws reached Monitor at six o’clock this ‘morning and secured breakfast at a farm house. Then they went into the dense woods near by.’ The posse and militia arrived shortly after daylight and endeavored to find their trail. ome See . Woman’s Relief. The Woman’s Relief Corps Sr saCaeHobEappopeeHets Of this city have received an official circular from the organization’s headquarters at Bradford, Vermont, earnestly requesting them to make a special AXIS I ATA AAAI AAAI Base Ball al ~ North San Juan. Manager Leiter will take “The Nora: das,” to North San Juen on Sunday, when the team will play a game of baseball with the “San Juans.” It is expected that about forty spectators will go from this city besides the baseballteam. A banquet will be given in Bradbury's Hall after the game. The Ridge boys, who have won 8 number of ganures this season, have greatly strengthened their team by signing a couple of players from Oolgate, aud a good game is looked for. In the Graveyard A few weeks ago a Nevada City man with his wife and four children went to San Francisco to reside. Yesterday he told the TRansoriPT reporter about the hard time he had in getting a nice “housé, on account of the children. _He said: “I went to about a dozen places that were offered for rent, and invariably the quest ion_was asked thavé you any children ?’ and as soon as I answered in the affirmative I was refused. I became worn vut and disgusted. I told my wife all about it, and requested her to take the children. out to the cemetery, which she did, and I would then make another trial. I found a place that just suited me and when I +appHed the same old question was thrown at me, ‘have you any children?’ celebration of this day and also endeavor to interest the school authorities to arrange appropriate exercises. Every Corps member is asked to display the flag on her own home}. on Flag Day and to interest her neighbors so to do in order, _as the official letter states, “that we as Auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic and united with them in the furtherance of all patriotic endeavor may be recognized as those who stand for our glorious flag and the grand and undying principles of liberty and honor for which it is the one true emblem.” : : Every school may?fittingly honor this day with special exercises as a day of rejoicing, adopting a program suitable to the occasion, and of which the following features are Suggested to be used as a part: Prayer. Salute to the Flag. National hymns. Addresses by Soldiers and Patriots. Fiag Drills. Quotations from orations on the Flag. Ringing of Bells. Every child waving a flag and possessing it for himself is indeed a treasure to be admired and revered. There are no school children too young to love the flag, none to old to be ashamed of it, Patriotism is a sentiment—an emotion, capable of being cultivated to a high degree by inspiration. Itis not an incentive to military. action with a tendency to war, but rather a promoter of peace, and no nobler sentiment can be created than love for the flag, which is the mantle of Columbia standing in the foreground beckoning the oppressed of all mankind to come under the folds of the robe of love, there to dwell in harmony and security in this land of peace, the Canaan where the wanderer may rest, the oppressed find relief and all be the equal of his fellow-men. June 14th will be the 125th anniversary of the Birthday of the United States Flag. When it is considered what it has cost to give birth to this flag, what it has cost to maintain it and what it means to this Nation and to the world, there is no honor too great that should not be conferred upon it. Our flag was born in the throes of liberty, wounded in the battles of freedom and sanctified in the cause of humanity; threfore it should be honored for all the security it guarantees, for all the mercy it proclaims and for all the power it implies. It is the flag that has been ever raised in honor and never lowered in disgrace. It is the flag that represents liberty of thought and religious right, and floats today, beautifully hovering in the breeze around her Cuban protege, a protectorate against “man’s inhumanity to man.” It is the flag that gracefully waves in the Orient, a respected monitor in the Celestial Empire, guiding the world in the solution ot a Divine problem, remonstrating against avarice mento. last evening. cisco. morning. noon train. San Franomoo, June 11—Cleus Spreckles, the sugar magnate and muiti-milltioneire, will plange into politics during the coming fall, his object being to defeat Governor Gage and to place Mayor BE. E. Schmitz in the Governor’s seat. This information comes from an authorative source and is entirely, correct. It is of the utmost moment, too, for Claus Spreckels has volunteered to back Schmitz, Schmitz will strive for nomination and run for the office if he is nominated. Shortly after the Bulletin published the news that Schmitz might go before the Republican convention as & competitor of Henry 'T. Gage, Claus at the Spreckele house in Van Ness Avenue. Daring the dinner old Claus went straight tothe point and opened his mind to Schmitz. The tenor of the sugar magnate’s talk was that he was anxious to defeat Gage, that he would like to see Schmitz Governor, that Schmitz would make a good Governor and that if Schmitz would undertake seriously, and vigorously to seek the office, and would begin to make political connections and gather strength for the etruggle, first, before ‘the convention and, later, before the people, he, Spreckles, would see that Schmitz did not iack money for the fight. He promised to give Schmitz not only generous but even lavish pécuniary support. Since that dinne: he has had Schmitz to dine a second time at the house on Van Ness Avenur and has renewed and repeated hic offer to the Mayor. What the motive of Claus Spreckels ‘knows whether enmity for Gage or ad miration for Schmitz is at the bottom ofthis unusual proposal. True, Gage and John D. Spreckles, son of Oleus, are bitterly hostiie to each other and are now at swords’ peint:, but Claus hitherto has never taken part in Jobn D’s numerous political quarrels and enterprises. In other matters Spreckels, the father, has been all that a father could be to his eldest son, but Claus has left John D. to paddle his own canoe in politics and the newspaper business, {It seems hardly probable, therefore, that the quarrel between Gage and John D. has stirred Claus Spreckels to action. “Married Today. po the residence of Mr. and Mrs, George A. Gray of this city, at 7 o’clock this morning, Frank Treanor and Miss Maud Kieffer were united in the bonds of matrimony by Rev. Wm. Angwin. Miss Elsie Gray was bridesmaid, while M. McCartin officiated as groomsman. The newly-married couple left on the 9 o’clock train for San Francisco to spend their honeymoen. Upon their return they will take up their residence near the South Yuba power house, where the groom has a positien with the Bay. Counties Power Oo. A short time after John Lopez and L, Garwood, two boys who were playing near, discovered the side of the cabin tobe in flames and burning briskly. They rushed to the cabin and with difficulty aroused Ben, who was sleeping very eound, and theybarely had time to get bim out before all the inside was in flames. It was a nerrow escape from cremation. The cabin
was eituated several hundred feet in the rear of Bridge’s stone yard, and alongside the cemetery fence. . The fire was caused from the stovepipe which went up through the roof. The cabin wis totally destroyed, with all ite contents, besides 250 feet of the ‘cemetery fence. The grass in the cemetery, and two large pine trees took fire and threatened to destroy surrounding property. 8. W. Marsh telephoned to Cbief Engineer Schmidt, who rustled a load of firemen and took them out in Phil Scadden’s wagon, . and when they arrived at the scene found the people of the neighborhood fighting the fire, and with their assistance it was soon put out. Shortly before 8 o’slock some mischievious boy turned in au alarm from box 52 in front of Dan Marsh’s residence, and when the firemen responded it was found that it was for the fire which had been extinguished an hour before. ; Disbanded Today. Connors’ Uncle Tom’s Cabin Company, which appeared here Monday night, disbanded at Colfax this morning. Some of the players returned here and others went to San Francisco. Visiting Friends. Mrs.N.
