Mulloy, President of the Board of Education, presented each graduate with a diploma, showing that they had successfally pursued the course of study of the Nevada City High School, and) were permitted to enter the State Uniyersity withcut farther examination. The tbree-act comedy of “A Rival by Request,”-was then presented, and every one of the east acted their part to perfection. The play is full of fun and humor, and under the direction of Prof. E. H. Barker every bit of mirth was. brought out. The stege setting was very geod, and the wait between acts was not near as long as ie asual with amateur performasces. A short sketch of each character would not be amiss. : Carroll Ashburn, who impersonat Walter Pierson, a gay young bachelor, acted well his part. “Juliaa Wright, ic the role of Pierson’s friend, carried his part to per-. fection. Harlan Wright, as a retired business man, showed that he was fitted fer the], place. Edgar Barker in the guise of a re-. tired farmer, Benjamin Briggs, gave evidence that he had takem lessons in rural life. Owen Penrose, as Lord Anthony McMullen, Smythe’s friend, acted as if he bad studied well hie lines. Norman Shaw, as Smythe’s servant, gave spirit to the play and he acted well. Louise Prout and Elizabeth Morgan, as Mrs. Burnett and daughter, were praised highly for their adaptability to the characters. Jeanette Watson, as the wife of Benjamin Briggs, carried the part to perfection, while Ruth Richards, as her daughter, received much’ praise. The industrious housekeeper at the portrayed by Elizabeth Flewellyn, in amanner that reflected much eae upon the young lady. The players were repeatedly encored, and the pley was highly appreciated by the large audience present, ° New Lodge of Elks. Quite a delegation of Elke from Nevada Oity and Grass Valley will go to Marysville on Saturday, the 2let inst., to assist in instituting a new lodge of Elks at that place.
