been given at Odd Fellows hall tomorrow evening under the auspices of the
Degree of Honor has been abandoned.
The advance sale of tickets was not
encouraging. .
The Southern Pacific railroad company will make the usual Fourth of
July reduction in tickets to all points
on the line. ‘Tickets will be sold July

Buried This Afternoon.
The funeral of the late Mrs. Kate
Stover took place from the family residence this afternoon and was largely.
attended. The remains were interred
in Pine Grove cemetery, the pall bearers being J. M. Walling, B. F. Snell, H.

C.J. Naffziger.

Mr. Mills, who also has two brothers
in Missouri. Public Administrator
Torpie bas taken charge of the remains
and the property.

Newsy Items Gathered From Saturday's
Downieville Messenger.
The ladies of the Catholic church at
Forest will give a grand ball at Clute’s
hall on July 4th.
Louis Buzenet was again visited with
a stroke of paralysis last week and his
condition is very serious.
Thos. J. Perryman, who has been absent from this county for several years,
returned recently and is working at
the Gold .Bluff mine.
Val Hartling, who has been = troubled with rheumatism censiderably of
late, has gone to the Campbell Springs
where he will remain for a while.Shaughnessy’s team came in Thursday loaded with a quartz mill and
machinery for the Otsego Mining Company, which owns the Lewis ledge on
the Middle Fork.
F. White, of Nevada City, arrived
here last Monday and left the following day for Plumas county. He goes
to Spanish Ranch, for the purpose of
examining a gravel mining property.
T. B. Gray, the Nevada City agent of
the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance
Company, came up on Wednesday’s
stage. He went to Sierra City Thursday, and expects to remain there a few
days.
A trust mortgage containing $749.50
in revenue stamps was recorded at the
Clerk’s office this week. It was from
the Nevada, California and Oregon
Railway Company to D. C. and A. D
Moran, trustees.
W.G. Halstead, a prominent mining
man of Smartsville, accompanied by
his wife, arrived here Wednesday. Mrs.
Halstead was formerly Miss Florence
Bent. She resided in Downieville in
early days, her father being County
Surveyor during the early sixties.
The capacity of the box-factory at
Lewis Mill will be doubled this year
by the addition of the machinery now
being put in place, and a new warehouse has been erected in which to
store the manufactured lumber, also
alieavy plank crossway, on which the
wagons will be loaded from the warehouse.
J. R. Sinnott, of Gibsonville, has
been appointed a deputy grand presi-.
dent at large of the N.S. G. W. and
Thos. J. McGrath, of Sierra City, waS
appointed district deputy grand president for Sierra county. His jurisdiction extends over the three parlors in
this county, situated at Gibsonville,
Downieville and Sierra City.
The construction of a telephone line
to Downieville and other towns in
Sierra county would prove a_ great
advancement towards bringing the
mountain towns into closer communication with the lower country, and fill
along felt want. It’is to be sincerely
hoped that the plans of the Sunset
Company will fully materialize.

Two large compressors are run by a
Pelton wheel, operated by free water
from the river. It has a fall of ninety
feet with 3,000 inches of “water brought
in by amile or more of a flume. A
500-volt dynamo is: also run_ by jit,
whereby all of the works are lighted by
electricity. The Plumbago is lighted
throughout by electricity.
