On Steam Railroads It Is Giving Place
The Southern Pacific Company is arranging all the passenger coaches on its lines
with an air contrivance by which a small
whistle in the cab of an engine is caused to
sound a warning to the engineer that he
shall stop the train, says the Record-Union.
The air whistle will take the place of the
bell cord now in use on trains, and the
change is made on accouut of the unreliability of the gong to sound in the engine cab
when the bell cord is pulled, especially on
long trains. The whistle is in use by a
number of large railroads in the East, and
it will be but a short time betore all the
engines and cars of the Southern Pacitic

thorough manner, which will prevent .the
soft, muddy spot that has heretofore existed there every winter. The credit for
these improvements is due to Hon. John F,
Kidder. He is having a stone wall built in
send lot, at the corner of Bank and Bennett

at once. Approaches are being built from
the wall to where the houses will be put
