The cheering prospect of another big
harvest is gall and wormwood to Democratic issues.
¢
Another year of prosperity will make
the advocates of free silver as scarce a8
buffalos in Kansas.
The Hon. Arthur Sewall is going
abroad this year in preference to going
on the Chicago platform again.
Abdul Hamid shows a disposition to
join Aguinaldoin holding out in the
hope of Democratic success in November.
Fewer failures in all sections of the
country last April than in April, 1899.
That's pretty good proof of prosperity
in a Presidential year.
A decrease of 284,000,000 pounds in
the quantity of wool imported in a year
shows the value of protection to wool
to the American farmer.
The Democratic party has twice been
tried and twice been found wanting by
the present generation of voters of the
country. It should hardly hope to be
trusted again.
The scarcity of issues for Deniocratic
campaigning is shown in the eagerness
of the leaders of that party to lug in
the South African war and other foreign questions.
The Republican party has always
depended upon commercial tranqaillity and prosperity for its success.
Democratic hope is founded upon
strikes and business depression.
A Democratic candidate for the Presidency onetime remarked the tariff
was ae local question, and a good
many Democratic managers now feel
that silver is also a local affair.
The Democrats are more interested in
finding a question that will serve their
purpose during the campaign than in
advancing any positive policy of government. With them it is “anything to
get there.”
Tennessee produced nearly a million
tons more coal last year than in 1895.
That ought to be an industrial object lesson to the South, especially as
practically the whole of it was used at
the factories of that State. F
Records of the Postoffice Department shows that the amount of mail
of all classes in the United States, in
1899, weighed 1,565,666,508 pounds.
This was enough to fill 39,142 cars witb
freight. This record was the largest
in the history of the country, and was
due to the remarkable prosperity and
unprecedented business activity now
existing. In dull Democratic times
business of the postoffice always declines.

Catholic church has at last been settled. The case came up again on Monday in the Justice’s court. OC. F.McGlashan, attorney for plantiff, moved
to have a suit brought upto quiet the
title of the money. The suit was denied by Justice Hill, which ended the
contest, the attachment at the same
t' me being dissolved. The moaey had
been in litigation since lest August.
The case was briefly as follows: The
Catholic ladies got up a fair to pay the
bill of the church. Father Olaire disapproved of it and ordered them not
tohold a fair. They, however, went
ahead, held a fairand deposited the
money with Lewison & Co. Mrs. Annie Cahill, sister of Father Claire had
a bill against the church and attached
the money hence the suit.
