The sixteen dances and three extras on the program were none too many for this delightful occasion and the superb music rendered by Wild’s orchestra received encore after encore. Many present were of the opinion that the ball was one of the most~successful and enjoyable events of the kind ever given in this city. One thing is certain—the young people of the Class of 1902, who under the able direction of Prof. E. H. Barker managed the entire affair, did themselvés proud and are justly entitled to much credit from} the public. The graduates, however, consider that the people of Nevada City should have some credit also, and desire to thank them one and all for their assistance and co-operation. No expense was spared in preparing for the event, and notwithstanding the fact that the ball was largely patronized, not a very large sum will be realized. PPR ERR HD HDD ‘A Good Place to Live. LL CALIFORNIA is delightful, but in comparing the t southern with the central counties one would say that the south is a good place to visit and the north a good placetolive in. If one wishes to raise oranges he can do so in either section, if he has the money. In-regard to climate, there is no difference except that the south lacks rain. ‘That is what makes the mountains all bare instead of covered, as in the north, with noble forest, whose _ cool shade and purling streams are so delightful during the warm summer months. Such fishing as we have in various portions of Nevada county cannot be enjoyed in lands whose summer streams are only sandbanks. All central and northern California is filled with delightful places of resort, anknown, unfortunately, to the world, but sources of perennial enjoyment to us. We have not, like our ultra enterprising southern friends, the ability to create resorts out of nothing. Our pleasure grounds are not the handiwork of man. We cannot offer, except here and there, the comforts of vast tourist hotels, but in’ our primitive, awkward way, we just go and camp out. Some day a race more verile than we will hear of the opportunities here awaiting the enterprising, and then things will move. And the first discoverers will have their choice of claims, Editor in Jail. Hono.vuty (T.:H.) Juve 6, via San Francisco, Jane 13.—Walter G.
