Wasamaron, Ja une 16.—The Hawaiian
Commissioners and Secretary Sherman’
signéd the Hawaiian treaty at 9:20
o'clock this morning, and at 3:45 p, m.
it was sent to the Senate.
By its terms the Provisional Government of the Island cedes all rights
of sovereignty, the Islands to become
a territory of the United States, which
comes into possession of all public
property and is to assume not over
$4,000,000 of debts. AIL revenue from
the sale of land is to be used in the
Islands for educational and other public purposes. Local laws are to be
passed by a local legislature subject
to approval by Congress. The present
laws and treaties in effect are to continue to govern pending Congressional
action. The Japanese Government
today filed a protest, on the ground
that the treaty promises to bring about
a breach of the treaty. relations of Hawaii and Japan.
When the treaty reached the Senate
it created much discussion, Senator
Perkins opposed ratifying it before the
December term, till it was known the
Japanese Government had protested,
when he and all others opposed to immediate action withdrew their objections. It will probably be passed with-~’
out a dissenting vote.
