At an early hour yesterday morning
yon could see the baseball. enthusi‘ests on the streets of Nevada Gity.
They were booked for Nerth San Juan
where the Nevadas had an engagemMentin the afternoon. The town of
‘North San Juen and vicinity was-rife
with baseball yesterday, no less than}
‘three games being played.
. The first game was in the morning
‘between a nine from French Corral
and one from Colgate, and wae rushed
through at North San Juan. The
ge Corrale won by a score of 17 to

. At 10 o'clock the North Bloomfields
went up against: North. San Juan, at
the town of Sebastopol, and there was
@ large crowd present. The San Juan
boys won out by a score of 12 to 10. It
Was a very good game,
_ In the afternoon the Nevadas played
with a picked nine from .all the towns
on the Ridge, and won hands down, as
the Ridge boys failed to connect very
much with Ballestero’s pitching. The
game was Nevadas from the start, and
after things were safe in band, the}:
Nevadas took things easy. The largest
crowd that has witnessed a baseball
game on the Ridge for several yeare}:
was present, and they were ‘all enthusiastic. The Nevadas won .bya
score of 27 to6. People from. all over
the Ridge were there, and it. reminded
one of the days of old, when that part
of the county was in its glory—the
good hydraulic days. The -diamond
was not of the beet, it being in’ a field
with grass about two: feet high, and
the batsman had to make a long hit inorder to reach first. The: Nevadas
used up two pitchers for the Ridge
boys, Wm. Moulton and Ed German
‘being the unlucky ones, The catching of George Ray Jr. was a feature of
the game and if the Ridge boys were
all ofthe, same material there ‘would
be a different ta‘e to tell. Ballestero’s
pitching was very speedy, he being
unfortunate enough to strike two men.
Young Bradbury was hit in. the head:
and knocked out, while COharles
O’Connor was struck over the heart
and retired for, ,a few minutes, but
pluckily went back to work and
caught the game out. The San Juans
played a good game for the short time
they had been together,, The boys
were treated royally, and the fifty
who went over never bad a better time.
Upon-their arrival there was a chitken
dinner awaiting them, to which:all did
Glenbrook Park was the scene ofa
large gathering yesterday to witness
the defeat of Grass Valley’s pride, as
they were strictly up against it when
they tackled the Kimball & Upson’s of
Sacramento. The Grass. Valley boys
were somewhat erratic, aud did not
play near their usual game. The
pitchers of both teams were touched
ap frequently, but the Sacramentos
came out with fiying colors, winning
by ascore of 7 to 5. The Kimball &
Upsons have bad phenomenal luek
this season, besides playing good ball,
as they have won almost every game
have to play better ball if they intend
to keep up their reputation.
In the game of baseball’ at Conley’s
field yesterday between the Athletics
and Morning Stars, the Athletics were
vietorious by a score of 17to 18. The
young men are capable players: and at
a future time will take their place ‘in
the ranks of the larger nine.

Kept, His Eye on the Windows.
Most businesses are distinguished
nowadays by keen competition, and
I heard a story the other day which
shows that the humble occupation
of window~cleaning is not exem
from it. In a certain studio in the
city a window cleaner got a contract
job to clean the windows by the
year, He wasn’t so punctual about
the cleaning operation as he was:
about drawing his pay, and after
bearing with his eccentricities for
awhile he was sacked, and another
man. got the job.
ngs went better.for a time,
but one day the ousted man stuck
his head in at the door of the studio and yelled; “Am I to get the
job to clane thim winders ?”
“No,” was the reply; “we have a
window cleaner already.”
“No, you hain’t,” was shouted
back; fell four stories this
mornin’ at Briggate, and he’ll .clane
winders no. more.”
It turned out that the statement
was true, and the enterprising man
was reinstated in his old job on the
understanding that he was to pay
strict attention to both extremities
of the contract.—-Glasgow Times.
Hopeless Case..
The laziest: man in Stotland is
said, to have been the Galashiels
‘joiner who after repeated dismissals
from his employment by his master
was at length forcibly laid in his
coffin by his shopmates and carried
off for burial by way of a joke. On
the way they met a farmer, who asked if the man was dead.
“No,” was the reply, “but we intend to‘bury him. He is that lazy
he should not be allowed to live.”
At the farmer’s request they took
off the lid, when the farmer asked
the lazy one if he thought he could
eat two or three boiled potatoes.
“Are they peeled?” inquired the
man.
“No,” replied the farmer.
“Ah, weel, just let the funeral
gang on.”-—London Answers.
