The explorer’s business is simply to select from this network of tracks, keep a general direction and hold on his way. They are veritable footpaths, never over a foot in breadth, beaten hard and netted beneath the level of. the forest bed of centuries of native traffic. Like the roads of the old Romans, these footpaths run straight on through everything, ridge and mountain .and valley, never shying at obstacles, noF anywhere turning aside to breathe, Yet within this general straightforwardness are a singular eccentricity and an indirectness of detail, And the reason is not far to seek. Ifa stone is encountered, no native will ever think of removing it; he. simply walke around it. It would never occur to him that that stone was a displaceable ok ject and that for the general weal he wight displace it. The Whale’s Appetite. A whale’s appetite is phenomenal, . His chief diet consists of jellytish. He has simply to open his mouth and paddle along leisurely in order to take in jellyfish by the wagon load. Such is
the method adopted by the whalebone whale. The sperm whale, on the contrary, captures huge squids weighing often several tons. Like his brother the whalebone whale, he must be constantly on the lookout for food; otherqwise he would starve. AS many as fourteen seals have been taken from a thirty foot “killer.” Other fishes of enormous appetites are not uncommon. The bluefish, for example, thrives on sardines and other small fish. Assuming that one bluefish eats ten small fish quires 10,000,000,000 sardines to feed the 1,000,000,000 bluefish on our coasts every summer. Most curious of all ers is the hydra—a strange creature ‘ap be turned inside out withaut ng its appetite or its power te jentifie American. Witness the phenomena of éleepwalking, the postilions in stage coach days who slept in their saddles and cavalrymen who do it today, infantry who, haye heen, known on forced marches, sentinels their beats: carrying. thei. guns. in @ 4ixed position while they sleep.all we know policemen, may do it too. People who; talk in their sleep are familiar to all of us. Experiments made by’ Speir, Armstrong and Child on 200 college students of both sexes showed that 47 per cent of the men and 37 per cent of the women talked in their sleep. A number of things might be proved by these statistics. Of these sleep, talkers one-half of the women and one-third ‘of the men are able to answer questions while asleep. More women, than men could.answer questions on any subject, fot alone that of whieh they. had been ,talking. It has also been found that most sleep talkers are under twenty-five years of age. Evidently, then, with ,the muscles and organs of the body: all working, it is the brain only. that sleeps. and by @ means all of the brain. The senses of sight, hearing, taste may be very much-awake while the subject sleeps. A. sleeping. person hears and answers questions, ranges his bedclothing, covers his eyes to keep out the light, draws away his hand-when the experimenter tickles it. A child is broken of the habit of sucking his thumb while asleep by putting aloes on it. He is cénscious of the bitter taste and dreams of wormwood. The nerves, then, and the brain cemters corresponding to them are awake. A busy lawyer, exhausted by overwork, one night went out to supper with some friends, walked with them, and the next day remembered absolutely nothing of the He had not been drinking. The man was simply asleep during the whole evening. His. conscious, memory—that is, consciousness itself—slept. ~<Ainslee’s Magazine. medicine.
