If You Have No Regard for Reputation a Newspaper Should Not. We clip the following from the Woodland Reporter: ‘‘At divers times the newspaper man is asked to suppress the names of certain young men of this town who havé gotten into trouble in the shape of drunken rows and have been arrested. No matter what has been the course in the past, it dves not go apy more, If you don’t want your names to appear in connection with a disgraceful affair, keep away from it on the start. POWDER ‘ Most Perfect Made. 4o Years the Standard, ‘ WHY MONEY TIGHTENS, —— : ae side Institutions. The Sacramento Bee says: great deal of explanation of, and answer to, the question. ‘Why is money tight?” Every political economist, every newspaper editor, every street-corner statesman has his own peculiar ideas upon that subject. If there is plenty of money at home, it might be conceded as a general proposition that ‘the root of all evil” ought to be loose enough, Many people think that it is principally the vast drain upon our finances, produced by procuring abroad that which could just as well be obtained at home, that causes money to become so tight, One who loves to delve in figures has been looking up the question of Life Insurance, for instance, and produces these startling figures of money sent away to further build up foreign Life Insurance Companies: For the six years ending January 1, 1895, according to the State Insurance Commissioner’s report, Eastern Life Insurance Companies have taken from the State, over and above what they have paid in losses and endowments, $11,656,357, not one dollar of which is invested here, with the exeeeption of ‘one Company, which-erected a building in San Francisco, Of this amount the. Equitable took $2,270,560, New York Ife $2, 403, 552, Mutual Life $3,362,966 and the NorthWestern $713,694. This is a tremendous sum of money to send away, _+--—.-___<-2e->-—— Want MinIng Property. W.C. Ralston, in a long interview. with an Examiner reporter says: *‘The interest which has been stirred up in Europe is very remarkable, aud there. has never been so much inquiry for dividend-paying mining properties as at. present. Gold mining is the chief feature. of the stock markets of London, Paris, Amsterdam and Rerlin. Thebulk’’Of the stock business done in London and Paris today is in the mining securities, Two years ago, had application een make toa London brokerage firm of ood standing for stock in mining properties, he answer would have been: ‘‘We only do coservative business and deal in consols nd railway securities only.” Today the dining end of the Stock Exchange attracts ll the attention of brokers, and consols and ther” securities do not receive the consideration they formerly did, The London. market is but a reflex of the markets of all other large cities of the British Isles, wer errmco oc fe oo Superior Court, The following business was transacted in the Superior Court today, Hon. Evangeline Chapter of this city has been invited, and a delegation will probably go down, Tomorrow evening the grand officers will visit Evangeline Chapter. The occasion will be the anniversary of the Chapter, An_invitation to be present has been accepted by Aurora Chapter. The Graduates’ Ball. Next Friday evening the High School Claas of 93 will give the customary ball. It will be held’ at Armory Hall, and the arrangements made for the event are very complete, The young ladies-will use every effort to make the affair a social success, and will depend upon the generosity of their friends and the dancing public generally, to ensure a satistactory result financially, Goyne’s orchestra has been engaged for the occasion, ceo Return of ‘the Soldiers. Dastardly Work. The work of destruction that has been carried on at Pine Grove Cemetery recently has been mostly confined to the breaking of plants and shrubbery, tearing off of pickets from the fences surrounding graves, turning on the water hydrants at different points and letting the water run, regardless of the damage that might result, and similar petty offenses, Other deviltry is being discovered. A pretty head-stone, with the figure of adove carved upon it, at the grave of the child of Mrs, R.°J. Houston, has been tampered with either by some malicious grown person or some foolish boy: or girl, and the dove destroyed.‘ The grave stone was put up twenty years ago, at a cost of lately. Ifthe party or parties who do this dastardly work are caught they will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, A reward of $25 is offered by the Cemetery Committee for the arrest and conviction of any one who commits, depredations in the ‘cemetery. 2-9 @ ee ’ Set For Hearing Wednesday. F. A. Johnson, the party arrested last week on a charge of robbing the saloon of Mike Hanley in this city some time ago, will have a hearing before. Justice: Mulloy Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock. About the only evidence against him is the charge made by Beever, the bicycle thief, who says that Johnson is the fellow who robbed the saloon. Beever told the officers he’ could
show them where Johiison hid the cigars he stole, but when taken out to look for the stolen property he could not-find it, Is is doubtful whether a case can be made against Johnson, mo eee : IF you want a’ reliable dye that will color an even brown or black, and.will please and satisfy youevery time, use Buckingham’s Dye for the Whiskers, !> Company (©, after spending a week at Camp Budd, returned home last evening.
