When it comes to celebrating, however, Nevada county people always make the American eagle scream loud and long, and our Fourth of July celebrations cannot be excelled in patriotic exhuberance, magnificence and splendor anywhere on the Coast; in fact, we have a State reputation along this line. The coming demonstration, which will be held in Grass Valley this year, will be no exception to the rule, as the citizens of that town have arranged for one of the grandest celebrations ever held in Northern California, and the people of this city are already making their plans and preparing to go over and join in the festivities, After the lapse of more than a century and a quarter since the proclamation of independence and the issuance of the Declaration to the world, quite agreed as to how that celebrated. Inebriety is only an intensifying of the same innate impulse. In our soberer moments we feel that “the day we cele— brate” ought to be» devoted to impressittg upon the minds of the youth a realizing sense of the inestimable blessings of .Jiberty and to a serious minded consideration of grave problems of State, which would convert the festivity into a gladiatorial political wrangle, forgetting that the most profound truths must be transformed into sentiment before they are made effective for any good purpose. For the maintenance of free government a waving banner or a strain of martial music will accomplish more than the most irrefragible deductions of logic. Therefore, with an underlying stratum of Sense to determine the general direction, the day should be devoted to the inspiration of patriotic sentiment, to the fixing in the mind of the important fact that here and elsewhere, individually and as a people, America and Americans must stand for equality of opportunity in all the avenues of life and pae-eminently before the law. Let the day be dedicated to the exaltation of that single conviction, through the sentiments, with all the banners that can be lifted to the breeze, with the best niusic that can be obtained, with diversions that do not debauch and with all the punishment of the stomach that the much-abused organ can stand with sobriety. Let the people rejoice and be glad in all the moral ways they know how, for it is in the heats rather than in the heads of men that our nation will be strong and its career glorious.
