THE DERBEC MINE.
—o
What the Learned Editor of the Marysville Democrat Says About It.
A few days ago the works at the Derbec
drift mine were closed, the men .paid and
discharged, the ground owned by the com-—
pany having been worked out, The mine
adjoins the noted claim of the North Bloomfield Company on the north and only two
miles distant from the hydraulic works of
the latter. The Derbec mine has been
worked from the first by drifting and the
company have steddily employed from thirty
to fifty men during about fourteen years.
We first visited this mine twelve years ago,
at which time the Superintendent claimed
that it was paying a fair dividend on the investment. At the same time the mine of
_ the North Bloonifield Company was being },
worked by hydraulic process, using three
jarge monitors, one of which plied the water
through an eight-inch nozzle. The men. in
the Derbec were taking out the channel only
and hoisting it to the surface, a distance of
about four hundred feet, it was
duniped on a small platform and washed,
leaving very little of detritus or soil t
reach the river, Three men were manipulating the three monitors in the Bloomfield
(mine.and they were kept at work steadily,
\paving three large are tlectric lights on the
bank to furnish light during the night
‘These three men with three thousand inchee
of water furnished from Bowman dam, under
& pressure of more than one hundred feet,

depth of more than two hundred eet to get
at the pay strata of gravel. The Bloomtield Company washed more earth into the
river in oné day than the Derbec Company
did in one year, yet both of the companier
were working the-same channel and for the

a Crawford Mill.
Louis Green of Salt Lake City, who has
recently become interested in starting up
. mines at Union Hill, near Grass Valley,
was in town today, He informs us that he
and his partner, Mr. Schofield, who will
arrive from Salt. Lake this evening, will
commence operations there immediately.
They intend using the Crawford mill, something entirely new in this section and ‘which
is said to be the best mill yet invented for
crushing and treating quartz© With this
mill no concentrators are used, the arrangetreated in the mill and the gold extracted
up to eighty-five per cent of the assay
value. It is said that all kinds of ore can
be worked closer by this mill than by any
other methud. Refractory ores are worked
successfully, and tests made of the Meadow
Lake ores were very satisfactory. A Salt
Lake Company that intends operating at
Meadow Lake this summer wil] use one of
these wills.
Mr. Green came up’from Grass Valley to
take a look at the Kirkham’ mine, and was
favorably impressed with the property. poe
