There was a picnic, however, when the announcement was made that dinner was ready and the tables began to fill with people. The hungry horde on the outside, seeing that only about a third of the crowd could be fed at once and not being content to wait for'a second or third table, many of them made a rush and-jumped the low fence in a swarm. For a short time it was a regular scramble for something to eat, but order was finally restored and the people were all fed, atter a fashion. The public dinner on that occasion was far from being a success and it has never been attempted here since. : Years ago a 4th of July celebration was considered a rather tame affair if there wasn’t a circus in town—one of the old-fashioned kind that used to travel around the country by team and have only one tent and no lemonade or peanut peddlers.
