FRIDAY. ..... . JUNE .9, 1896. I
‘MARKHAM AND THE CABINET. s,,,,
He Will Probably Be One of Them If
McKinley is Elected.
A political secret leaked out lately .
which is of far-reaching. cOnsequence We etin
not only to the Republican party of ¢
California, but also to the party as a
whole in every one of what are known
as Pacific Coast States. Ex-Governor
Markham is at present in the East. To
be more particular, he was two: weeks .
ago, at Canton, Ohio, which is the home .
of W. H. McKinley. The Governor There a
journeyed toward the land of the ris¢»mparat
ing sun about the time that Colonel nessed th
Harrison Gray Otis left the city, some bration h:
ten days ago, bound in the same dison with]
rection. Markham arid Otis have made b¢ consid:
a political alliance, by the terms of 88 true
which the ex-Governor, who hails from
Pasadena, is to be, should McKinley be
the next President of the United States,
the Pacific Coast’s representative in
te latter’s cabinet. Governor Markhim was a member of Congress from
this state when McKinley sat in the
lower House, the men forming a friend’ ship which has never been permitted to
grow cold through the years of time.
Markham in the early ages of the sen.
timental campaign which months ago
resulted in ‘turning Califomia’s eighteen’ votes Over -to the protection
prophet, realized that it would be more
than good politics if he could induce
the eagle to ‘t in double harness
with himself:: Colonel Otis was perfectly willing to.play ball in Pasadena,
and the rest was easy enough. Markham will, in the event of McKinley’s
election, be the latter’s Secretary of
War.

His ‘Last Week.
Prof. E. F. Barr,who ‘for several
months has been the instructor of the
Nevada City Athletic Club, will close
his engagement here tomorrow evening.
The Directors find it hard work to
keep up interest in the club during the
summer months, and the attendance
has fallen off so of late that Prof. Barr
has concluded,to quit. He will remain
at Grass Valley for awhile and possibly the club at that place may arrange
to keep him right along. We are sorry
that he has found it necessary to give
up his work here, and trust that next

Death of John Grimes, Sr.
At 12 o’clock today John Grimes, Sr.
breathed his last. He had been afflicted with rheumatism and other ailments for a long time and for the past
two years was sick most of the time.
Deceased was a native of Treland, aged
76 years, and had resided in .this city
and vicinity for nearly thirty years
An aged wife and six grown sons survive him, the latter being Charles, Dan,
John, James, Joe and Thomas Grimes,
all but two of whom are now in this
city. The deceased formerly worked
at mining and was a very industrious
man, well liked by those who were acquainted with him. The time of the
funeral has not been set yet:
For the Last Time.
