A CLEVELAND ROMANCE.
How Miss Josie Wilhelm of Grass
Valley's Met Her Fate.
Yesterday San Francisco Chronicle
prints the pictures of Mr.and Mrs, Wm.
A. Becker and gives the following story
oftheir romantic meeting: :
Early this year Mr. and Mrs.) L. C.
Wilhelm, pioneer residents of Grass
Valley, sent their handsome daughter,
Miss Josephine Wilhelm, to Cleveland,
U., to study under the master violinist,
Jobann Beck. A few weeks ago she
returped to California on a hopeymoon
trip, the wife of William A. Becker, the
pianist, easily the first in his native
state and accredited throughout the
Kast, where he has played extensively in
concert, as one of the young American
pianists and Gomposers who must be
accorded a place among the very first.
Mr. and Mrs. Becker were married
Jast May in Chicago at the residence
of the bride’s aunt. This interesting
wedding followed a short and romantic
courtship, which commenced~in Herr
Beck’s studio. Becker called so fre* quently on his violinist friend that he
could not help meeting the talented
violiniste from Culifornia, and then
there were difficult concertos to be
played, and no one could accompauy
half so sympathetically as the handsome young pianist. Ittook but.a few
weeks for the inevitable conclusion of
their short aefuaintance.
Miss Wilhelm’s sister in Cleveland
and her aunt in Chicago wrote letters
of indorsement to the home folks in
California, and there were all sorts of
public indorsements of both the intégrity and attainments of the suitor, 90
the wedding was delayed just long
enough for the mails to carry the tidings
back and forth.
For the past few years Miss Wilhelm
has speut much of her time in San Francisco studying with Marquardt, so
there are aS many congratulations in
this city for Mr. and Mrs. Becker as in
Grass Valley. They will probably remnain another month in California.
Mr. Becker commenced his public career when he was but 16 years of age.
He has been a pupil of Mason and
Scbarwenka, aud is at present devoting most of his time to study, accepting but few engagements. He has a
masterly technique and the temperament of-the honest artist.
