Major Simonds and his battalion, being in the first-named regimént, took their departure, and only left incamp to take care of the prop-. moka ber of Company OC (who was not on duty), was on the scene, armed with various implements, and installed themselves ag firemen. Considerable straw was burned, and were it not for the prompt action taken serious results might have followed. P. F. Simonds, the new Major of the Second Regiment, Third Brigade, is making himself very popular among all whom he has occasion to meet. He makes an excellent looking mounted officer, and for knowledge as a drillmaster he -compares most favorably with any in camp. First Lieutenant Ben A. Bost is in command of Company CO and presides over it just as though he had been at it all of his life. Levi Nicholson has proven himself to be an able assistant and the boys are loud in their praise of all of the officers. The new Adjutant, Compton Gault, is performing his duties in a most admirable manuer. He surprised all his acquaintances here at the parade last night, when he gave his orders in _ true military. style. Lieutenant Ladis A. Waling is very careful to see that the “cook—-house” is well supplied witb rations, and is becoming very popular among the boys. Drilling was commenced in eapnest on Tuesday.
