New Yore, June 20—James T. Mulhall, of Denver, Colorado, was arraigned
before United States Oommissioner
Shields on a charge of using the mails
for the purpose of fraud, He demanded an examination and was held
in $2500 bail. It is charged Mulhall,
ander the name of “The Merchant Company,” of Denver, seut out circular letters to milling companies in Kansas
and Nebraska, asking consignments of
carioad lots of flour, meat and other
produce and that he sold and never
paid for the shipments ghich he received.
Steamer Wrecked.
ApEn, June 20 — The German
steamer Austuria from Yokohama,
April 19th, vie Hongkong May 12th for
New York, is ashore off Ras-Jerdaffon,
He
She will probably be @ total wreck.
The crew of the Astaria has been

The finance ocmmittee of: Cave No1
raised nearly $200 yesterday among
our citizens, and in every instance the
canvaesers were told to call again if
necessary. The amount subscribed,
in addition to the sum assesged the
members of the cave, will give the
Curlies over $300 to expend in making
our proad Bird of Freedom scream
at the big celebration. The American
Eagle ie at home in the mountains and
he soars to lofty heights, because he
has a broad expanse of country to
look over, and it is the greatest and
grandest land under the sun today.
It is truly the home of the brave and
the true, where every man stands on a
plane of equality, the like of which
blesses no other country in the world
at present, and history records no such
God-given sense of freedom in the.
past. The Curly Bear alsc dwells amid
@ mountainous environment and he,
above all things, loves his home and
freedom under the Starry Banner of
America. :
Hence it is, that the local cave of
growlersis expected todo extraordinary
and startling things when Independence Day rolls around. The hairy
bruins never disappoint the public,
and the big Bears and litthe cubs never
imitate features that lie buried in the
past—they are nothing if not original.
The parade on the evening of the
3d will be a sight of a lifetime. It will,
without question, excel anything of the
kind ever held in Nevada county.
Grand Curly Bear E. W. Schmidt will
lead the big pageant; and his Chief
Aids will be Fred Zeitler, Henry Lane,
Frank Morgan, Frank Grissel, Lee A.
Garthe, D. E. Morgan, George Calanan, Chas. Grissel, Fred E. Brown, A.
J. C. Nilon, B. Wolf, F. L. Arbogast.
A number. of assistant aids will
be appointed on his staff and their
naines will be pyblished hereafter.
After the Curlies finished the business incident to their regular growl, .
last night, the parade committee, con-.
sisting of Fred E. Brown, Charles
Grissel, Dr. A. V. Morgan, Harry
Evans, J. C. Nilon, Frank Griseel,
Herman Brand and A. Krumb, held a
meeting. It was decided to have a
pumber of floats in line with at least
four tands of music. There will be
a large number of mounted Curlies
and several citizens horseback.
Numerous dancing bears will keep
with being insane.
