Among these are dropsy, Bright’s disease, diabetes and maladies which terminate in some one of these, Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters stimulates the kidneys, not as an unmedicated alcoholic stimulant would by exciting them, but by gently impelling them to renewed action and perpetuating their activity and vigor. Thus the blood is once more insured purification and the organs themselves saved from destruction. An American poet .wrote a eulogy of Washirigton, ‘‘whose glorious life should compose a volume as Alps immortal, spotless as its snows -The stars should be its type, its press the age, the earth its binding and the sky Truly some American poets go in for marvels of metaphor. A schoolmaster, describing a money lender, says, ‘‘He serves you in the present tense, he lends you in the conditional mood, keeps you in the subjunctive mood and ruins you in the future.’’ A close observer of human nature remarks, ““‘Time marches on with the slow measured tread of a man working by the day.’®. A French author is charged with the prediction that France will throw herself into the arms of the liberating sword. This is not so bad as the Democrat’s speech, ‘‘We will burn our ships, and, with every sail unfurled, steer boldly into the ocean of freedom. ’”’ —New York Dispatch. ; Mexico’s Fans. ; In Mexico fans were used long before the conquest, and when Montezuma heard that the Spaniards had landed and were about to visit him he sent for goldsmiths and lapidaries and ordered, among other gifts which were to be offered to Cortes, two feather fans, ornamented with a sun and moon of highly polished gold. Like the Japanese and most other ancient nations, the Aztecs evidently considered the fan an emblem of authority, for they generally placed it in the hands of Ometeuctli, god of paradise, and of Totec, the military disciple of , Quetzalcohuatl—New York Post. . @ Watchmiakers, The term ‘‘watchmaker,’’ as it appears upon the signs of small shops all over town, long since ceased to be a truthful indication of the business transacted within. _Most of the watches carried by Americans are made at great factories, ang most of the so: called watchmakers of the little shops are merely watch carpenters. Doubtless the making of a watch would be as much beyond the power of many of them as the making of a shoe would be beyond that of the man that passes his life in making only heels. Mr. Ricnarp Brrgs, the well-known Druggist, 207 MeGill st., Montreal, P. Q., says: I have sold Ayer’s Family Medicines for 40 years, and haye heard nothing but good said of them. I know of many Wonderful Cures performed by Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, one in particular being that of a little daughter of a Church of England minis-ter. The child was literally covered from head to foot with a red and exceedingly troublesome rash, from which she had suffered for two or three years, in. spite of the best medical treatmeni available. Her father was in great distress about. the case, and, at my recommendation, at last began to administer Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, two bottles of which effected @ complete cure, much to her relief and her father’s delight, I am sure, were he here to-day, he would testify in the strongest terms as to the merits of Ayer’s Sarsaparilla Prepared by Dr. J.C.
