The South Yuba Canal Company has purchased the Predmore place at Clipper Gap and intend to build a storage dam there this summer. The dam will be built about 40: feet high and §its storage capacity is estimated at about 10,000 mehes or over 150 million gallons. The site is an excellent one: The com. pany has purchased 240 acres of land oe will subdivide the part not used for the dam into small tracts and sell it. The fact of such a large dam -with good fishing -adjoining the land will make it a popular resort in: the foothills. The building of the dam will insure a steady flow of water below in case of accident and will also act as a settling reservoir.—Colfax Sentinel. Prospective Work at Smartsville. The Marysville Appeal says that Chas. E. Rother, general foreman. for the “Yuba River and Gold Mining Company” was in Smartsville this week making arrangements to mine certain sections of the Yuba river. J. H. Warne was instructed to draw out a: bill for umber and have it on the grounds as soon as possible. Your correspondent is informed that the carpenters will be at work in less than two weeks. It is expected than when the works are fairly started upwards of fifty men be employed, -and if the enterprise proves a paying one there will be employment for an unlimited number of bread winners. Boy Seriously Hurt. George Henry Allen, twelve-year-old son of George Allen, was quite seriously hurt yesterday. He was out to the merry-go-round and attempted to jump on while it was in motion. The result was'that the boy was caught between the cable and the jack, the cable tearing through the flesh and muscles ‘of the calf of his left leg, clear to the bone. The machine was stopped as quickly as possible, the boy extricated and taken to his -home. Dr. Muller says the injury may affect him for life. It was necessary to take eight stitches to draw the gaping wound together. The funeral of the late John Grimes Sr., which took place from St. Canice Catholic Church yesterday afternoon, was largely attended. Saturday ‘evening the members of the Rebekah degree lodge had a social hop at Odd Fellows hall after the regular meeting was over. Saturday evening the Theater was filled with people who gathered to hear the free concert on the Sterling pianos. The selections rendered’ were greatly enjoyed by the large audience. The sprinkling wagon now runs from
the Plaza in this city to Hill’s Flat, Grass Valley. In the latter town nearly all the streets are sprinkled, the town having a sprinkling wagon of its own. The baseball game at the old Rifle Grounds yesterday afternoon was not characterized by more than ordinary playing. The nines selected to take part did not fill and substitutes had to be put in. Otto Woehler of Spenceville, owner of the paint works at that place, has given 400 pounds of Imperial paint to the Glenbrook Park Association. Electricity may soon tackle thistle and jimcon weed. ~ Professor Woodworth of the Michigan Agricultural college announces that electricity is quite as cheap as salt for the killing off of weeds in the long run, as it is much the root.
