The statement recently made by the San Francisco papers that the open season for doves begins on the Ist of July is an error. According to the State law the shooting of doves is permitted from-July 1ith to February 15th. Boards of Supervisors in some counties have passed ordinances changing the date of the beginning of the open season, although we are informed they have no legal right to do so. In thts county no change was made, yet it is the opinion of all hunters that the Seasap should open a month earlier, as ander existing regulations the ‘birds have nearly all left when the time arrivés for shooting them. Down in San Joaquin county it is said that this, will be one of the greatest dove seasons hunters have ever enjoyed. All the indications are to the effect that doves will be more plentiful than ever and of finer quality. There ford, Conn. The Bayreuth ' Festival Opens. The Memphis Appeal, one of the ablest Democratic papers of the 16 to 1 variety in the South, remarks: Mr. Bryan said at St. Louis: “The man who fights the trust of commerce is quite as brave asa man who swims a river or climbs a Sen Juan hill.” This is an_unfortunate statement. It is capable of being interpreted as a sneer at the heroes of the war; but the worst is that it isnot true. It takes no bravery or not.the same kind of bravery to fight a trust as to swim a river in the face of the enemy orto climb a well defended hillside. Any cheap demagogue cay fight a trust. . This is a modification of an earlier expression, which was that the man . who honestly pays his taxes is quite as . much a patriot as he who swims @ river . or climbs a San Juan hill.
