Soon afterward the minister returned: 4} and was, of course, duly informed of } the presence of the unexpected guest. “Thereupon his reverence entered the . kitchen, where the lady was resting, ‘ahd, after surveying her critically with . . ‘suspicious. eye for several moments, ‘he addressed her in the following friendly manner: ‘‘Ma’am,”’ he said, “Pm sare I don’t know who you are, and I don"t know where you come from, and, . for anything I. know, you may carry off "in the Salmon river district, B. ©, f $70,000. The Anderson mine in the Parrott. addition, Butte, Montana, has been bonded and leased to the Butte and Boston Company for $75,000. At the onyx quarry at Big Bug, Ariz. _ twelve men have been put to work and machinery is being ordered to handle a large output. _ At the Mexican mine in. Sonora, “Siexino, there is a check system in use “to prevent drunkenness among the men. Only three drinks a day are al‘lowed. The American expedition which has been exploring in Tierra del Fuego has been successful in. finding gold in quantities which will yield a large profit. In the Julian mining district in San Diego county, California. there are nine quartz mills with a total of ninety stamps. Three mills are running and twenty mines are being worked. The Golden Cross mine, Hedges, San Diego county, Cal. for which $1,000,000 was recently refused, is reported bonded for $1,500,000 to Messrs. Oarmen “and Rogers, representing New york men. It is believed that, by the close of this century, ‘the demand for gold, great as it is, will be exceeded by the demand for copper. Oopper will be _ king in the sunrise years of the twen tieth century. For May the Alaska-Treadwell reports as follows: Period since last returr, 80 days; bullion shipment, $40,928; ore milled, 20,883 tons; sulphurets treated, 295 tons. Of bullion there came from sulphurets $10,597. Seven teams entered a rock-drilling contest at Baker City, Or., on the 11th inst. Chishlman and Pherson of the Rachael mine won, drilling 233, inches in15 minutes; Ashton and Ash of the Con. Va. second, 203g inches. . The first steam dredger to work for gold on this coast was shipped out-here from the East and went up the Sacramento river in 1849. After a short trial it was found that nothing could be made in that way and the boat was used to carry freight on the upper waters of the Sacramento. Ata rock-drilling contest. in Helena, Mont., on the 7Bth inst., Davy and Freethy of Butte won first money, drilling 41 15-16 inches in fifteen minutes; the same team made a record of 39 inches in Spokane, Wash., last years. W. Bieber of Lump . Gulch, Mont., single-handed drilled 155¢ inches in ten minutes. There were 1000 miners on the ground. A peculiar freak was played by lightning at the Silver King mine at Park City, Utah, last week. A bolt first struck and shattered the flagstaff at the entrance tothe main shaft, after which it. ran down the shaft on an air-pipe to. the 800-foot level. At this point it struck adrift whichit followed for a distance of 400 feet, knocking down a miner who was loading a car.—Mining and Scientific Press. 9809 The English Colony Celebrates. There were literary exercises and a banquét, General Jo Hamilton representing the Americans in speech ‘making. Yesterday at the Colony the eitire day was given up to horse racing: and athletic sports, and tonight a grand ball will be given in the open air at the handsome residence of H. G. Next week the contractors will get to work in earnest raising and remodeling that structure and preparingfor framing the addition. Chinese Jewelers. ‘There are two jewelers in Chinatown, but their establishnients do not s resemble the ordinury places known as jewelry shops. The Chinese jeweler is a manufacturer as well as a shopkeeper. His establishment is a tiny room up one or two narrow flights of stairs. The room in one place is divided: by an open work jron partition, with an arch and a counter near the window, where the jeweler stands at work. He isanelderly Chinaman, wearing -glasses, and he works over a tiny fire in the window. All his work is done by hand, and some of it is beautiful. There are heavy silver bracelets, which open with a hinge and fasten with an odd little staple. The fine raieed pattern is cut out, every bit of it, by hand. There are gold rings made in the same way. They are fine rings, made of 94 carat gold. Almost notbing is kept in stock. There may chance to be a few ‘tings’ and bracelets, which are taken from a small: safe. Most of the goods are made to order. When the manufao‘turer is asked the price of a ring, he weighs it before he answers. His scales consist of a slender stick of ivory, perhaps a third of a yard long, covered with Chinese characters. At one end is a small brass plate suspended from the weight, also hanging by a thread, is moved along to the balancing point by the jeweler as he holds the little machine in his hand. The front part of the little shop is filled with a stove, table, dishpan, dishes—as many things as -conld be srowded into it.-New. York Times, The Best Made.
