How Sir Walter Besant Was Cured
of Promiscuous Almagiving.
It was one of the daily customs of

handed him back the penny, saying:
“Guy me siller. or nawthink. The idea
of a gent like you givin’ a poor old woman like me a dirty penny! Guv me

arms threateningly. Str Walter started
to go, but she grabbed the lapel of hts

one day, chancing to enter the same

him out to the bystanders, she
screamed, “‘That’s *im—the fine rogue
in the long whiskers—the bloke in

This was too much for the author.

tunnel has been driven in a distance
of approximately 3600 feet, and an incline sunk a distance of 42 feet below
the level of the tunnel.
In Old Diggings, Shasta County,
several mines are either shipping ore
to the Keswick smelter or are getting
ready to do so. A. A. Anthony, who
is superintendent and general manager of the Central Mine is sending
about twenty-five tons a week across
the river. ,
A power transmission plant is be{ng put up near Reward, from which
power will be transmitted electrically
two miles to the mill of theReward
Gold Mining Co., where induction
motors will be used to drive a 20stamp mill, air compressor and rock
breaker. ;
A vein of ore running $15 per ton
fs reported struck in the crosscut on
the 200-foot level of the Maltman
mine, near Angels, last week. Two
14inch Cornish pumps are on the
ground at the Forty-nine mine, near
Douglas Flat. Each pump weighs
eight tons.
A strike which has aroused much
interest in Angel’s Camp and Stockton has been made in the Benson
Mine; near the former place. While
sinking the shaft ore was encountered at eighty feet which was fairly
spangled with free gold, some of the
samples running up into the hundreds
of dollars a ton.
George L. Carr and partners have
sold 200 feet of the Yellow Rose of
Texas Mine in Trinidad County to the
Union Consolidated Gold Mines Cqmpany, owner of the Dorleska Mine ad. joining. There has been some litigation over the strip between the companies and the sale is the result of a
compromise. ‘
Mr. McCall, the finder of the rich
pocket at: Mountain House in Butte
County, is watching the pocket as
closely as a banker would watch his
safe. The hole is now only two feet
deep and three feet wide, yet from
this he has already takn out $4,000.
One piece that weighed seven pounds
had more gold than quartz and another four pound pfece was pretty
nearly all gold.
At Oroville, Butte County, there
are now twenty-two mining dredges at
work, and six more are being built.
The bottom gravel is free from cement and carries from 30 to 40 cents
per cubic yard in gold. The ‘and,
when bought for farming and fruit
raising cost about $75 per acre, but
cannot be purchased now for less than
$1000 per acre for mining.
A report has reached Los Angeles
of a valuable discovery in the desert
country of San Bernardino County,
eight miles south of Amboy station.
The discoverers are three prospectors
—Marcus Proff of Daggett, Pete King
and Seamore Alf of Ludlow. They
have located eight claims, two of
which are supposed to’ cover the
larger portion of the ore body. This
ore body is exposed by three crosseanyons that are cut depe into.
Several parties have located claims
fin the Cinnabar section of the West
Fork of Beaver Creek, near Garretson’s Medical Springs in Humboldt
County, and the whole country is likely to be plastered with notices. Prospects made in that section several
yebrs ago developed numerous fine
chimneys of cinnabar, which on being
treated by retorting, yielded superior
quicksilver in good paying quantity.
