“Days of ’49,”’
Ghe Lecture Siven at the Wethodist Church Last Gvening.
.
Those who were fortunate enough to .
hear the lecture by Prof. Hunt on the .
“Days of ’49,” at the Methodist Church
lest night, enjoyed a rare treat.
The lecturer was at home on the sub.
ject of early California history and in .
a scholarly and most graphic manner
depicted the habits and custome of the
conquest by Spain, the establishment
of Spanish rule with its results in social,
domestic and civil life. The ceding of
the territory to the United States with
the hot contest as to its admission into
the Union on the then all abeorbing
slavery question, and the heroic and
noble fight made by the Pioneers for a
free constitution was portrayed by the
speaker in glowing terms of scholarly
eloquence.
’
The highest tribute of respect, and
honor was rendered the noble men of .
49. How we wished that the house
had been filled with our Native Sons
‘and Daughters, so they might know
how precious is their heritage of this
Golden State.
