Those who were fortunate enough to . hear the lecture by Prof. Hunt on the . “Days of ’49,” at the Methodist Church lest night, enjoyed a rare treat. The lecturer was at home on the sub. ject of early California history and in . a scholarly and most graphic manner depicted the habits and custome of the conquest by Spain, the establishment of Spanish rule with its results in social, domestic and civil life. The ceding of the territory to the United States with the hot contest as to its admission into the Union on the then all abeorbing slavery question, and the heroic and noble fight made by the Pioneers for a free constitution was portrayed by the speaker in glowing terms of scholarly eloquence. ’ The highest tribute of respect, and honor was rendered the noble men of . 49. It is said that the yacht was sighted off Jefferson Barracks at 7 o'clock Sunday evening during a storm. The boat was in. distress and was . headed for the shore.
