“THEODORE ROOSEVELT
~
To Be Inaugurated March 4, 1905:
FOR PRESIDENT,
FOR VICE-PRESIDENT,
Charles Warren Fairbanks.
THE SLAVE TO MAMMON
NCLE RUSSELL SAGE, who is ninety years old
and possesses $90,000,000, Says he is too busy to take
a vacation. The Oakland Tribune, however, thinks
he states the case ineorrectly and says that Mr.
Sage is too rich to take a vacation. By way of comment and
criticism on the multi-millionaire’s excuse, the Tribune puts
the case thusly:
“Nominally, Mr. Sage owns ninety millions of dollars.
In reality he is owned by ninety millions of dolllars, and he
works for a hard, cruel taskmaster. This money demands
his undivided attention, his unremitting toil. It fiercely refuses to let him take a day off or dismiss for a moment, from
his mind the load of responsibility it imposes. He cannot go
out and fish or sit on the grass under the trees, soothing his
senses with the songs of birds and the scent of flowers, because he is harnessed hard and fast, body and mind, to that
ninety millions of dollars. Poor man, he cannot get away
from his load long enough to get a breath of fresh country
air or take easeful enjoyment in quiet among friends who do
not perpetually talk money, think money, make money; who
are poor enough to be free and sane enough not to believe
that a man’s true mission in life is not to pile up all the
wealth he can for lawyers te fight over or degenerates to
squander.
“Mr, Sage cannot take his dollars with him when he dies.
He cannot pave the road to heaven with them nor present

PRISON. BREAN TINYARTED
Scheme to Release Wood,

From Folsom. —
SACRAMENTO, June 25—The Bee this afternoon gives
publicity to a startling report that another big prison break .
has been prevented at Folsom by Warden Yell. a :
The ring leaders of the affair were Jack Brady and Kid

them as a propitiary offering at the gate of Paradise. They
will not soften the conditions of the future state nor soothe
the pangs of. suffering in the final hour. The money may
build stately monuments to his memory, but it will neither
inspire nor kindle tender recollections in any human heart.
The sight of monuments erected to him will only serve to
recall memories of Mr. Sage as he really was—a slave to
wealth, and a toiling serf to its acquisition.
“Russell Sage is speculating on what will become of his
wealth after his death. He had better be pondering on what
is to become of his soul after his money has got through with
it. When it is separated from the gold with which it has so
long been associated will it all be dross—a pitiful, worthless
bit of sediment unfit for anything in this world or the next?

“QOhick” Dorsey, who formerly resided bere, has taken up ber quarters
in the county jail at Sacramento, and
the reason of which is explained in the
following item from the Sacramento
Bee: “The first i in the court of
Justice March ednesday morning
which to get out of town and warned
not to return under penalty of being
sent to jail, She left all right, but Ler
love for Sacramento was so strong
that she returned, and was promptly
arreated and taken to jail. She surprised Justice March by pleading
guilty, and she was then given an opportunity to live in town by staying in
the county jail for ninety days. As
the Dorsey woman was leaving the
courtroom she performed the trick of
shaking her fingers. Luckily for her
the action was not seen by the Justice
or she would have been given ginety
days more.”
