By Carrier, * re Delivered to any part uffthe city. 12 t-2c Por Week N INTERESTING but not correspondingly instruc— tive debate occurred in the House one-day this week, the only apparent purpose of which was to show that General Sherman was correct in his definition of war. Mr. Grosvenor of Ohio contended that hostilities againsi the Filipinos had been conducted on more humane lines than were established in the war between the North and South in 1863-65. Mr. Grosvenor quoted liberally from the record in support of his position. General Grant had-urged the Washington Government to.make the Shenandoah Valley a barren waste. Stonewall Jackson had urged upon General Lee the policy of raising the black flag as the best means or resisting invasion. In the stress of the campaigns the belief was expressed that the way to peace lay through the valley of horrors. © ~ : eRe tae All this kind of talk is idle. The law of self-preservation applies to nations as well to individuals. Among men and women whom the law fails to protect that which is necessary is justifiable. The law condemns no man for taking life in defense of national life, adopt policies which would not be justified in a war in which the life of neither nation was at stake. : : The time to hold up to public view the scars of war is when war.lies in the perspective. It is of little use to dull the public mind with recitals of horrors which were the natural if not the lawful result of Government action. The private soldier is but a part of an elaborate machine. At mo point between the private and the head of the War Department can definite authority be placed. A common purpose is in view, and censuré justly fallsonly upon the man who fails to aid the accomplishment of that purpose. ———— Se Fe ee ee eee ‘the banquet hall of the Masonic building forthe Fourth of July, and_ will have open house for the Grase Valley Lodge and other visiting Elke, and cordially invite all their friends to come and partake of their hospitality and enjoy themselves with the things the benevolent Elks will provide for the wants of the inner mga. CCASIONALLY one hears an ignorant or thoughtless parent rebuking a child for asking questions. It must be admitted, too, that the persistent queries of an inquisitive child are sometimes annoying. A wotried parent thinks, now and then, that.a child ought to reason out problems by itself instead of asking father or mother to explain such simple matters as why the grass is green instead of red, and why God made fleas. wee But a parent ought to be proud of a child which has an inquiring mind, for it is the bright child that wants.to learn all about the wonderful world in which it finds itself. A stupid child does not ask questions, for it does not see problems. It requires some brain work to see a question. ~ Curiosity, in English, has an unpleasant connotation in the popular mind. It is associated in idea with Peeping ‘Toms and prying busybodies. But curiosity, in several other languages—perhaps in all other languages—has not this evil connotation. Curiosity is a thirst for knowledge. Curiosity and desire for ease have-been the intellectual stimuli of the human race. They have brought civilization out of ‘savagery. What is scientific ardor but burning curiosity? What passion excited every original thinker, especially in natural science, to study and experiment? Curiosity, of course. Kepler, Newton, Galileo, Copernicus, Darwin, Helmholtz were all extremely curious. The asking of a question is preliminary to answering it, and it is often an intellectual feat to think of the question. People believed in the spontaneous generation of life until #@me one—perhaps Pasteur himself—asked the question, ““How can life come out of nothing?” theory of spontaneous generation was a fallacy. If a grown there many wonderful and puzzling things, wouldn’t he ply the Martian citizens with queries? and wouldn’t he deem the Martians very uncivil if they bade him hush and ask no questions? A child is a newcomer in a strange world, and it 4s right and proper that it should ask questions. J.
