T IS YOUNG AMERICA’S DELIGHT to make a noise, especially when it gets near the Fourth of July. That is natural and probably harmless as far as the noise goes. This year, however, many of the boys are ‘supplied with pistols which shoot blank cartridges, and A blank cartridge in the hands of a boy is just as dangerous asa .38 in the hands of an adult, and still the latter is prohibited by law. in allowing the boys every legitimate opportunity to celebrate, yet we believe this “toy” pistol practice should be suppressed. -If it isn’t, somebody will get seriously hurt. The results of toy pistol practice are not only on the increase. in the smaller towns of California, but also to an alarming extent in the larger cities. toy pistol is responsible for nearly every case treated at the ‘city hospitals. during this month alone thirty-seven small boys have sustained injury from these “warlike playthings. Corkers All Right. The Corkera of Nevada City went to North Bloomfield yesterday and took the boys of that town into camp. The game was a “corker” from stait to fiuisb, and there was ne doubt as to the outcome at any time. The Nevada boys won easily, and were royally entertained. Laurel Parlor of Native Daughters have made arrangements to entertain their friends and visiting members of their order at Pythian Castle on July 4th and 5th. The Parlor has taken a great deal of interest in the coming celebration and the members are now hard at work decorating a beautiful float torepresent them in the parade. They also have in charge the decorating of the Goddess of Liberty’s float, which promises to be as pretty as any ever seen here. The ability of the ladies of Laurel Parlor as entertainers is well known and it is safe to say that all who fall into their hands will be royally treated. Personal Mention. Miss Oarrie Neffziger of San Jose is bere on a visit to her mother, Mrs. J. Naffziger. L. L. The rumor prevailed at this city today tbat on account of smallpox prevailing at Grass Valley that city would probably ,ba quarantined. There seems to be no grounds for the uneasiness felt by some, for, while there area number of cases of smallpox in a light--torm prevailent “at Grass Valley, the situation is not at all alarming and. the health authorities have matters well in hand. Every precaution possible is being taken to keep the disease from spreading and a strict quarantine is kept on all houses where cases prevail, The rumor probably started from the fact that it has been stated that at the meeting.to be held tomorrow night by the City Board of Health some business of much importance will be transacted, but we this afternoon learned that the matter referred to was in the line of bettering conditions along the ditch from which the city gets its water supply. Another Game. There was a hard hitting game of between the Colts and Athletics of this city. The Colts won by a score of 80 to 18.
