FRIDAY, ..... . JUNE 30, 1899.
A SUIT FOR DIVORCE.
William Best Thinks Mrs. Best Should
Have Been Better.
Wau. Best was suing Lis wife in the
Superior Court today for 4 divorce, basing bie action ou her alleged cruelty.
They are people well advauced ia years
and bad both been married aud raised
children—now grown—before they united their destinies in 1889. The course
of their new venture in matrimony did
pot prove smooth, and on various occasions they agreed to disagree, separated for awhile, then kissed aud made up
determined to try it once more. .
Last October the climax of their
woes came. Mr. Best bad one of bis
wife’s sons jailed for threatening to
kill bim. ‘They bad no community
property. ‘he house they lived in
belonged to the lady and Mr. Best has
since found shelter beneath snuotber
roof.
His next step was to go to the courts
asking to be restured tu bis former condition of single blessedness. In bis
tale of woe tu the Judge today he
claimed that for a long time the defeodant would not spesk to him; that
ebe refused to cook for him when he
was sick; that sbe not only threatened
to throw him out of her house, but
vowed she would have him put behind
the inbospitable bars of the jail. (It
was such little demonstrations of disaesteem as these that impelled him to
go his way alone. His sensitive nature could not stand the strain.
When Mrs. Best weut on the stand
she told sanother story, sand in the
main it disagreed with Mr. Best’s. She
declared him the aggressor and pictured bim as irascible and domineering
beyoud eudurance,
George E. Kiley is representing the 4
busbanud and Charles W. Kitts is the
wife’s lawyer. ‘he two attorneys do
not seem«to get along aby smoother
when they ure arrayed sgainst each
other in court than their clients do ir

Miss Kahl’s Splendid Essay.
Oue of the brightest und ablest as
well as best-read of the mauy good essays at Wednesday night's high school

‘Tbrough curelessness reference to tbis
essay was omitted in yesterday's report of the exercises. This omission
does not however detract from the fact
that it was one of the very best oumbere on the program.

Tired of the Tramps.
The Truckee Republican says: It
seems that our people ought to have
some protection from the genus tramp
that go frequently infest our streets.
It is disgusting to see women and
young ladies stopped two. or three
times while walking ov Front street
by these traveling bobos, aud asked
for money. If s man wants work and
is willing to work there is no need for
his being idle. “If he can vot get the
work he desires, he bad better take
something else aud if he shows his
ability the way will open for other work.
But many of them donot want work
as is manifested by their evading a
house where « wood pile ie in sight. Ir
is av old proverb, “If a man will not
work neither let bim eat.”

Affairs of the City.
At an adjourned meeting held last
evening the City Trustees passed a
resolution of intention to provide, for
the grading of Longstreet. It was decided to elect a Poundmaster on Thursday next, the compensation to be a
salary of $15 a month in addition to
the usual fees. Applications for the
place will be received in the meantime.
Arrangements were made for looking
after certain arrangements connected
with the Fourth of July celebration,
such us sprinkling the streets, providing ice water, ringing the bella,
plucing seats on the streets, putting
extra lights on Pine street, etc.
That wonderful bicycis ride of nearly
» mile a minute that was reported as
having been made on Long Island, the
other day, by a wheelman who was
“paced by a locomotive,” is discredited
by the Eastern press. It is said to
bave been more a case of @action than
of bicycling, as the wheelman rode directly behind a locomotive tender
which carried « wind screen on the
rear to keep dust and cinders away,
and it operated as a funnel to draw the
bicyclist after it without much neces;
sity for work on bis part.
