fe, IE TRANSCRIPT. :7seMe or SUBSORITTION : 5 $6 Per Year evome: : ~ 42 1-2c Per Week P. 0, BOX B ———_ : MONDAY......--: June 4, 1900 ‘Rdftorial Notes.” If the Boer envoys will but. take the pains to investigate they will ascertain that they are being utilized for campaign material by some rather small Democratic politicians. The latter do not hesitate to take advantage of any cause that promises returns. Mr, Clark of Montana seems to. have completely overreached himself. If he had not done anything, a voté on his case might have been staved off indef. initely and until one was taken he ~ would have remained in the Senate. By resigning, he shuts the door in bis own facée until the Senate takes positive action on his new credentials, he must remain outside, . And, if the Senate takes adverse action upon them, ar now seems most likely, Mr. Clark wil} remain outside forever. Even indefiinite delay, which would have been in his favor had he not resigned, will now work against him. The insincerity of the Democratic outcry against trusts was never more clearly demonstrated than when the members of that party on the Judiciary Committee of the House voted solidly against a resolution proposed by the Republicans. of the Committee recommending an amendment to the Constitution, giving Congress full power over all corporations. The truth is that the Democrats oppvse anything end everything which they can persuade themselves that the Republicans favor. As long as the Republicans take no action, they declare that party favors the trusts; and as soon as the Republicans try to regulate these, the Democrats turn about and declare that the old party is trying to destroy state rights. Circuit Court involving the right to the word Hood: or Hood's. Messrs. 0. I. Hood & Co., of Lowell; -Mass.,. proprietors: of: Hood’s* Sarsaparilla, began suit for infringement against Dr.J. C,,Hood of Leuisville, Ky., -who was putting up what -he éslied “Dr. Hood’s Sarsaparilla.” After a hearing inthe U. S. Circuit Court at Louisville, Judge Evans on April 12 gtatited’ a temporary injunction in favor of 0. 1. Hood & Co., and restrainjog J. ©. Hood from using the word Hood in any way or form on any preparation of sarsaparilla.: : Messrs ©. I. Hood & Co. also began suit against a retail druggist in Indianapolis, Louis BH. Rankert, who was selling Dr. J. C. Hood’s Sarsaparilla. Dr. J. ©. Hood employed counsel and made a defense, but Judge Baker of the U. 8. Circuit Court granted. an perpetual. These two decrees establish the exclusive right of C. I, Hood & Co. to the word “Hood s” and decide in effect that nu other person can put up a Hood’s Sarsaparilla even if his name is Hood, nor can any retail druggist sell or offer for sale any sarsaparilla bearing the name Hood or Hood's other than that’ prepared ‘by. o£ Hood & Co. These decisions will be gratifying te eveny fair minded person. No manufacturer should.object tofair competition, but when an attempt in made to steal or infringe upon a business which has been established by great skill, labor and expenditure, jastice, cannot be dealt out too quickly. Nor should “substitution” be allowed, when a standard article is called for. Therefore, when you go to buy Hood’s Sarsaparilia you should be sure to get “only Hood's.” AT THE BASTBRN END. What is Going on at Truckee and in That Vicinity. Phil. and James Gowling came ap from Sacramento iast evening. The former will take a position here with tbe railroad company. The latter is on a tour of inspection. Mrs. Georgia Dilley’s pleasant countenance is again to be seen at the postoffice window. Postmaster Burckhalter says he now has the two most popular and best looking young ladies in town for clerk.s Among thvose who attended and took part in the annual gathering’ and games of the Caledonians in San Francisco Wednesday, we notice the pames of Wm. McDougald, Thos. ‘Carroll, Ed. Ross and D. D. McRae. James E. Henry went to San Francisco Wednesday night where he has parchased a photograph gallery and was to take charge on the Ist inst. Mr. Henry is a very popular young’ man and will undoubtedly meet. with good success wherever he goes. r Denied it .timwelf, “They say he is unhappily married and leads a regular dcag’s life.” “So I’ve heard, but he denies it.” “Denies it himself, does he?” “Yes. He says he only wishes it were true.” “Yes, yes, of course. I forgot that his wife has a pet poodle.”—Chicago Post. ‘ Light on the Subject. “You know the authorities employed young woman suspected of being a pickpocket ?” ] “Yes; and he made a failure of. it. A COMBINATION. Plants in Nevada and Yuba Counties * Join Hands to Reach the Bay. “The Call'says: Eugene J. de Sabla Jr. G. A. Grow, R. M. Hotaling, John Martin, William M. Pierson, Oscar Sutro and A. W. Linforth have incorporated thé Bay Counties Power Company, with a capital stock amounting to $5,000,000 for the purpose of purchasing and combining the Nevada OConnty and the Yuba County Electric Power campanies 4nd supplying Benicia, Vallejo, Woodland, Napa and probably other places with light and power. The general facts were supplied fast night by Mr. de Sabla, who
said: “The Nevada County ‘sod ‘the Yuba County Electric Power companies have been furnishing power and. electric light to cities and towns and have also supplied power for mining purposes. Among the ‘uses this electricity has been put-to have been that of running the dredgers that are mining for gold Oounty; supplying light and power for the Brown’s Valley mines in Yuba County; lighting the city of Marysville and furnishing power there for the operation of the ice plant and the Sperry Blour Company; lighting the town of Lincoln in. Placer County; furnishing power to the Sacramento Gas and Electric Pewer Company” and supplying power to ‘the electric plant at’'Folsom. The current runs over a line séventy miles long from the power houseto Folsom, “We haye also supplied light and power for Nevada City and Grass Valley, in Nevada County, and furnished p Wer for hoistingand pumping for the Nevada County mines.” From this it appears that the two companies have a large amount of present business and extensive plants. Mr, de Sabla estimated that they jointly. have at least 20,000 horse-power. While he had not the exact. figures at hand he knew that the capitalization of the new company, which will absorby the'two older ones, is much larger than their combined capitalization. The reason of thig was that large extensions were to be made that would cost a great deal of money. The name of the new company correctly sets forth the. purposes to extend tothe bay counties,{but the programme of extension has not been decided upon. The stockholders in the old companies and the new one are practically the same so that there can be no hitch in the project. oe Personal Mention. Co} “mth ANNIVER SARY. Of Rev. Sims’ Pas Pr Hea City. The twenty-seventh anniversary ut Rev. J. Sims pastorate of the Congregational church in this city was celebrated in a very appropriate manner jast Sunday. ‘The pastor’s text in the morning was—The Words of Christ as contained in the 22nd chapter, St. Luke’s gospel, 19th verse “Do This in Remembrance of Me.” . At the conelusion of his eloquent and pathetic remarks the Lord’s Supper was impressively administered. The evening exercises. were varied. Some very fine renderings were. given by the choir. Mr. Robb gave one of his charming solos and Dr. Victors in a beautiful bass solo established himself as a firct class vocalist. The pastor delivered an address in which he stated how thankful he felt for the support his people had given him through the long period of twenty-seven years and for their co-operation in all beneficient and religious enterprises. He was thankful particularly for a church home where his and the people’s interhearts could be fixed and their souls: fed—a regularly attended, constantly supported and devotedly beloved church home. He was tfiankful also for the privilege of continuing to the people the most important message ever given to the world, “Who-so-ever believeth in Christ hath eternal life.” He spoke of being in touch with all social interests and charitable organizations but he still believed that the Christian ministry was pre-eminently above all other ministries. This position he illustrated in an elaborate and forceful manner. The church was beaatifally decorated with a rich profusion of floral offerings, some of which were sent to him by old friends residing in other parts of the state. The occasion was one of interest and pleasure and will long be retifembered. Two Prisoners. Constable O. Harvey of Truckee arrived here yesterday having in charge an insane man, and O. J. Lansing, who was convicted of obtaining money under false @retenses. Lansing is to spend the next thirty daysin the county jail. The insane man seems to be . harmless, but hasa mania for being in Lansing went intoa Truckee restaurant to get lunch the insane man was left quietly resting in an adjoining room. When they returned the fellow was standing on top of a table without a stitch of clothing on. On the way to this city his thoughts seemed to be ranning wholly in the direction of appearing strictly in the same condition as when he came into the world. The insane man’s name is John Noonans. While confined in the «county jail this afternoon he bit off the end of his tongue. He will be examined tomorrow by Dr. Hunt. Piano Tuning and Repairing. C. W.
