A Tew Semanill to Re Put Up.
District Attorney Power Keeps
Criminal Element in Check,
. Died Ohis Morning,
Samuel Phillips Passes to the
Sreat Beyond,
The Grim Reaper has again appected
and taken from our midet one of our
beloved, who, while but in the prime
of live, has been forced to give up this
‘jife, and bas’ gone to his final reward.
At. about 4:10. o’elock this morning
breath left the body of Samuel Phillips
at bis home on Sacramento street and
his spirit passed quietly to its prepared
home beyond. He has been suffering
with miners’ consumption for some
time, having contracted the disease
while working in Grass Valley mines:
He has been able ‘to be around and attend to his businass till about three
weeks ago, when he was taken to his.
bed. He continued to get worse fora
few days and then began to get better . .
and although his death was not entirely unexpected it comes as a severe
blow to his relatives and many friends.
Every thing that kind and loving hands
and science could do was done to relieve his sufferings and prolong life,
but to no avail, as he was beyond the
power of man.
Mr. Phillips was raised in Grass
Valley, where ne is well and favorably
known, having resided there till about
two years ago, when he moved to this
city and with Henry Jacobs: purchased .
the business ‘of the variety store of
Joseph Cohn at the corner of Main and
Union streets, the firm name being
Phillips & Jacobs. He acted as manager of the business till the time of . \
being taken bedfast.
Mr. Phillips was a good man in every
respect, being.a faithful husband, a
true friend and a kind neighbor. He
was aged 29 years, 7 months and 6
days. He leaves a widow, four brothrs, Richard, Edward and John
Phillips of this city, and Thomas Phillips of Graas Valley, and five sisters,
Mrs. Henry Jacobs of this city and
Mrs. W. Doidge, Mrs. Samuel Stuart,
irs. Wm. Harris and Miss Bell Philps of Grass Valley. His parents, Mr.
od Mrs. Samuel Phillips, also live in
Hrass Valley. The grieving wife, parots and other relatives have the sinbere sympathy of all their acquaintnees.
The remains will be taken to Grass
Valley for burial, and the funeral conuoted under the auspices of the Forsters ,of America, of which order the
eceased was a member. . va Naas

have been completed and will be

construction was under the superinteridency of Matt. Waite, of this city,
and it is pronounced by mining men to

Some good gravel has been taken out
of the Frank mine recently. The
owners feel very much encouraged
ver the future prospects, and they
will commence te sink to bedrock
right away. Fifteen men are employed
and the force will be iucreased as soon
as further headway is gained. The
principal owners are Frank 8. Morgan,

who are good, practical miners, and
are deserving of success in their new

Beyond Control.
New York, June 3—The fire at the
Jersey colliery of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Westeriii Company at
Wilkesbarre, Pa., which has been raging for ten days, is now, beyond control. There is no chance of putting.it
out by the method now employed of
pouring water down the shaft. A conference of officials has heen held to devise a better means of fighting the fire.
Asa result the fire probably will be
left to itself until ashaft can be sunk
to reach the workings ‘at a point at the
back of the fire.
