It is quite possible that the same progress may have been made had the Democratic party been in power instead, but it is hardly likely that any fair-minded person will put forth such a claim. The Republican party has been a consistent party throughout its career, and it stands today for the three great policies for which it stood at its birth, and during its every year of existence since, Those three policies are Liberty, Honor and Progress. Equal liberty for évery 11an, woman and child under the shelter of our flag; liberty to live, to toil, and liberty to acquire. Honor—in a standard of value, and money of redemption, equal to the highest known among nations; honor—to pay in full every obligation; honor—to redeem every promise, implied, spoken, or written, Progress --not only of our own people, as has been shown in an elevation of the masses to the highest standard of living attained by any people of the human race; as shown in the development of our public school system, of our literature and its distribution, of our labor laws and of our industrial and financial undertakings throughout the length and breadth of the land; progress—-not alone in the elevation of-the people of the United States, but in the advancement of every people and every country where our influence is felt; progress—not only in a material upbuilding, but in a mental and moral elevation. > 4#pvperrrrpr se SERMONS BY PHONE NFINITE possibilities in the modification of church services are suggested by the fact that fifty patients in a hospital in Philadelphia listened to a sermon Sunday over long distance telephones. If the application of the telephoge to the transmission of Sunday sermons should become general, says the Oakland Enquirer, there might occur a falling off in church attendance. Think of the sav ing of time and effort possible by listening to a long distance sermon while reclining on a divan in your own home on Sunday morning. Think how convenient it would be to call up Central and say “Connect me with the Sanctuary of the Heavenly Rest.” If the Rev. Sebastian Somnolence got too prosy Central might be requested to switch you off to the megaphone annex of the Rev. Robustous Ranter. Gradually the public auditorium might be eliminated altogether and the popular sermonizer speak into a megaphone connected with a switch board. Of course it would be necessary to have a choir attachment, which might be effected by a combination of the musical features of several churches at a central station. The one perplexing difficulty in such a scheme would appear to be the necessary elimination of the collection box. However, inventive genius might supply this by having an arrangement by which connection with the church circuit should be conditional upon a monthly or weekly subscription. This would certainly be an improvement over some of the systems of raising church revenues. The one difficulty appears to be that some non-union preacher might establish a nickel-in-the-slot sermon system by which the regular rate would be discounted. Then there is also the possibility of a substitution of the phonograph in the central office for the real preacher and with interchangeable records it would be possible for the sermons of popular preachers in the larger cities to be repeated on small circuits throughout the country. The modifications of this system and its effect upon the ecclesiastical machinery open up vistas for infinite conjecture. Olara Nancarrow. Kirkham. Doxology. Invocation. Responsive Reading. Hymn 155. Cards dominated over the whole AngloIndian society of Calcutta in those days, and many a,crime inflicted on the unhappy natives had its origin in the losses at the gaming table of their alien rulers.
