Square Hall, San Francisco, was crowded with an intelligent and appreciative audience, which had gathered to listen to the first series of free lectures on gold mining inaugurated by the Gold Mining Exchange of San Francisco. Stereoptican views enlivened, instructed and added interest to. the occasion and assisted materially in explaining the remarks of the speakers. The’ exercises opened with a series of pretty views thrown upon the screen. These ‘. consisted of scenes in the Yosemite d. Valley and among the Big Trees’ of Calaveras county. Géneral Walter . Turnbull then made a short opening address, introducing the lecturer of the evening, Prof. Harold Fairbanks, Ph. D, of the University of Californin, and lately connected in active field work with the State Mining Bureau. President Turnbull said: “The Gold Mining Exchange, in the furtherance of of gold mining in ‘California, believed that it could be aided bya series of lectures given by experts and scientific men upon the great mineralized belt known all over the world as the Mother Lode of California. Just how old Father Lode was, is not apparent. However, we have great faith in the solid character of the old lady of the mountains, who probably came to California before Marshal and Sutter or even Bret Harte and Joaquin Miller ever heard of, and whose shortcomings, if any, can easily be atoned—if she produce gold enough. There is an old widow in the East they brag about known as Hetty Green, whose supposed yearly income is about five millions. Our rich California widow, old. Mother Lode, and the little lodes, show an income last year of fifteen .millions, so that California has still ‘the richest prize in. the world, with titled suitors seeking her wealth as her investments, in reality, show that fifty millions will be her annual income before long. Had I the sophistry of Chauncey Depew, or the oratory of his old classmate and our friend, W. H. L. Barnes, or even the sentiment of that lonely Bohemian, Horace Platt, I might a mythological tale unfold of the formation of this wonderful yellow metal which lies hid den between walis of granite and slate and formed amongst the first work of the Great Creator. “That the gold was not cast down from. above is a fact pretty well. es‘tablished. How it was released from below by the convulsive thrusts of molten masses fighting for place will ‘be told by our speaker here tonight. At the present time mining is not the poor man’s business,as it was in the days of ’49 when each individual miner dug up and washed out his own pan of dirt, closely watching for the golden shimmer, and setting ‘a quicksilver trap for the minute particles which would otherwise have been washed away and lost. ‘The mining industry now needs an aggregation of the poor man’s sayings to meet the great expense of déep mining which is necessary to success. To afford an opportunity for the safe investment of these savings with a certainty of large returns, the Gold “Mining Exchange has been formed. It has already been instrumental in assisting the six meritorious prospects which have been listed in the six weeks of its existence. We are here tonight to learn by what means the ‘risk in mining is being reduced to a m: um and why men with small capital join together in mining enterprises with: as much security as the merchant in his store or the manufacturer in his work shop. I will detain you no longer but will ask your forbearance and leniency toward this our first effort, as most of our photographs were taken by novices, in fact we are all novices, reaching for more experience and greater knowledge. I now take great pleasure in introducing Prof. Fairbanks who has so kindly volunteered to lead. us into unknown depths and show us what is hidden there. Prof. Fairbanks then gave an exhaustive disquisition on auriferous ‘a weer deateatic eghinal ana bs toe formations and traced the existence ‘and éxtentof the Mother Lode. He inthe most crude fashion and ‘only within the last quarter of ‘a century has it been reduced to a science. surface the roy wae denser’ than cal ages, the globe has been subject to incessant disturbances attended with repeated elevations ‘and depressions. The mountain ranges have been squeezed up and tilted and bent through these agencies and the deposits of the interior molten mass have been. percolated upwards through fissure and have been deposited near the surface. Mr 9-4 is disseminated in exceedingly small quanMuch speculation has been indulged in regarding the origin of gold found in veins. An ‘ of regions where located hot springs in which these dep. . ositions of gold’ and quicksilver are . its plans to assist in the development . gai ol a Be ‘betwee }posa Pla said : For ages mining was carried on PRICES: strata folded together‘and revolved. The gold bearing quartz veins were formed and are probably. due to. the ". ageney.of “hot eyitinga” whose tiuimibier qu ¢ and volume have been enormous. This by the action of the rain and frost and broad beds of the sluggish streams quantities of freed gold which has become broken off and separated from the erosion of: the dic ataeb Gate. 7 si thes¢ a he hi ate ee olter avd voleanic ash and boulders were brought down the streams burying these deposits beneath a lava cap. Gold bearing veins are found in the mountainous portion of nearly the whole State. They kinds of metamorphic and eruptive rocks but are parti ularly abundant, in what is ‘eros slate, . . 1 f The great mining interest, however, has settled in the locality of the Mother Lode, and people often refuse to look at mines situated elsewhere. By some this mine is held to embrace the whole mineral belt along the western slope of the Sierras and extending into Mexico on the south and British Columbia, = north. By as geologicouiities. ing veins of this region are divided into three divisions: the lower, the middle and the upper belt. The middle one, which is the most continuoys and regular, is almost considered the Mother Lode. Throagh a portion of its extent it, is characterized by a single remarkable fissure, In other places it branches into @ num-. ber of parallel veins. The.term was probably first applied to'veins worked at Nashville, 12 miles south of Placer. , ville, in 1850. The magnitude arid. ot portance of this mineral belt»isme shown from the fact that along. the} whole length of the lode,’ more than . 100 miles, there is an almost continu< ous series of mineral locations ¢omprising more than 500 patented claims. A peculiar feature of many portions of the Mother Lode is the presence of a’ green vein matter called marcposite, which is associated wiih magnesia and iron. The magnitude sometimes assumed by this lode is shown at Quartz Mountain, Calaveras county, which is a mountain 600 feet wide, 14 mile long and 250 feet high. It is composed wholly of quartz and yein, matter. On}, the Matiposa Grant is an} exposure of . rising 80 feet. : That the lode is, a true fissnre ‘is ‘amply proved: by the. uni-} versal presence of gouge seams. The greatest depth to which the lode has been opened is 2200 feet, and shows no weakening of the vein or deterioration of the ore. The depth to which gold bearing veins extend is an open question. Along the Mother Lode they will extend, probably, to depths beyond that which expense of handling will permit. grams then explained the nature of the formation of veins, their liability to pinch and swell and branch off from the main body. The width of the vein was also demonstrated afd’ mény. ‘of . . the points and peculiarities cited in his lecture. Mr. Geo. E. Hogg, M. E,,. , change then explained the devel ment of several of the mines listed the Exchange. This display, of :dia+ grams was mixed with a leaven ia the way of illustrations of pioneer mining blockade of the Sierras, etc. The descriptions closed to the satisfaction of everyone and it is to be pit grha the success of this ex tional Venture on th att of of aie Ex: change. will, induce » the . management to continue these lectures at frequent rectly in the line of information desired by the public, especially those whose life is confined to metropolitan environment.
