"Sulphur occurs very widely. distrtbuted in the mineral kingdom, partly free and partly combined with other elements. The free sulphur is either found pure in regularly formed crystals or intimately’ mixed with earthy matters. In its native state sulphur is largely found in Sicily and Italy and as a general rule in abundance in volcanic districts. The brittleness of sulphur renders the cleavage imperfect. Sulphurie acid is-an-important combination and a very dangerous one-in inexperienced hands. . Sulphur combined with a number of elements, such as fron; copper, lead, etc., furnishes the sulphides. In the vegetable ‘kingdom sulphur is a small constituent of the
albuminous bodies and of certain volatile irritant oils. -Moreover, the vegetable juices contain it in the saree of Kaiw Her, He—So you know my wife? She—Oh, very well indeed. When in Haarlem, Vandyke ¢alled upon Frank Hals and; without ‘making himself known, said that he was anxious to have bis portrait painted. but, as he was in a great’ hurry, he Hals went to work and finished it, and Vandyke was much pleased; »-But por. trait painting seemed ‘a very little thing, said Vandyke, and, he asked Hats to change places with him. Whe Lost Atlantis. “The Lost Atlantis” is a favorite subject of song and story, and even now strange tales are told by sailors who claim to have seen a great white city rearing its domes and minarets up through the green of the sea. Atlantis Was a continental island between Hufope and America. Solon, as yng ago ; as 600 B. C., learned the story in Hgypt, and it is from him and later from Plato that the tale has been handed down to modern peoples. Atlantis was reigned over ‘by three kings of marvelous power, and the inhabitants were a warlike people far ‘advanced in civilization, The three kings finally became so puffed with von Europe, the pur pose of which wak to destroy and enslave. The Athenians met the invaders and after a fearful battle gained a de cisive victory. Two days later mighty éarthquakes shook the earth, and tremendous inundations came. When peace succeeded elemental turmoil, the gea stretched where once had been Atlantis Unique Tablecloth, When a southeast wind is blowing, the visitor to Cape Town is treated tc a peculiar and interesting natural phenomenon, for under such conditions Table’ mountain, in the language of the natives, “puts on a tablecloth.” In other words, the thin line of fleecy cloud forming above it descends until it rests flat upon the mountain top, with its edges drooping gracefully over its sides. It is really not unlike the article of household use which gives it its name. ' Tennyson and Barnum. . Tennyson was extremely eager at one time to visit America, and touching this point a story is related to the effect that Barnum offered him an enormoug sum to make the trip, though probably not as one of the attractions of the “greatest show on earth.” “All you have to do,” said Barnum, ‘is to stand on a platform and have your hands well shaken.” The poet, however, de elined the tempting offer. \ be He Kept His Leg. Twelve years ago J." W. Sullivan of Hartford, Conn., scratched bis leg with @ rusty wire. Inflammation and blood poisoning set in. For two years he suffered intensely. Then the best doctors urged amputation, “but,” he writes, “I used one bottle of Electric Bitters and 1 1-2 boxes of Bucklen’s Arnica salve and my leg was well and eound as ever.” For Eruptions, Eczema, Tetter, Salt Rhéum, Sores adi all blood disorders Klectric Bitters has no rival on earth.
