Interesting and instructive. “Nansen in the Frozen World” is the title of a book recently published.and which is sold only by subscription, It contains an account of this explorer’s discoveries and experience in the Arctic regions; also an account of a: journey /across northern Greenland with Lieutenant R. E. Peary of the United States Navy, and a history of the ‘discoveries made by the earlier explorers. The book contains a large amount of interesting and instructive reading matter, adapted alike for old and young. Mrs. J. E. Boke of Napa is now in this city canvassing for subscribers to this valuable work, and is meeting with* good success. She is also canvassing for another book entitled “The War in Cuba,” being an account of the struggle for freedom on that island. The story is told by Senor Gonzola de Quesada. Both books are written in a very interesting style, and aside from their temporary worth will be valuable as works of reference in years.to come. Chinese Gold Mines. The prospectus of a large company being brought out in London to develop by itself and sub-companies mineral resources in north China— eastern Mongolia—states that a concession has been o extending over 30,000 square miles, of territory owned by Prince T’san. It is stated that for centaries past the Chinese have -been engaged in washing gold from the gravel along the rivers having their rise in north China, and at present 100,000 natives find employment in this industry. With the building of the great Siberian railway, with its branches into north China, a rich field jy promises to be opened. Triplet Calves. Al-. most its greatest use is for those whose condition is so impaired as not to be able to get the good they should out of their ordinary food. In nearly every case with these, Scott’s Emulsion of Cod-liver ‘ brings back appetite, stimulates digestion, restores color an plumpness, and controls the diseases of thinness. Tne Expert W itmess. . The present custom which permits! each side to call in its own expert and . pay him for his testimony is calculated . to produce anything but expert testi. mony unless the term expert applies to} manipulation of facts to suit his client’s ! case. It would be about as conducive to . justice if each side were allowed to re. tain and pay a jadge and jary of its . own. In fact, the practice is so obviously calculated to defeat instead of aid the ends of justice that it is difficult to see how it ever originated. The mere fact that a witness ia employed and paid by the defendant or plaintiff unconsciously enrolld him on that side, and there are few experts whose testi mony is not modified by such an arrangement. This custom has led so often to a flat contradiction regarding facts between. opposing authorities that the general public has lost confidence in such testimony. This is, of course, very unfortunate, as it is beyond question . that a man who has devoted his life to a study, for instance, of poisons and their effects on the body is in a better position to judge of the probabilities in a given case than the ordinary layman or physician. Under a system whevze the expert is called by the court no question of bias could be raised, and science would not be disgraced from time to time by those who are willing to trade on their scientific reputation. —Popular Science Monthly. * The Best Made.
