eg E TRANSCRIPT! Pstgbllohed Sept. 6, 1m, BOHEMIA. OO Td rather live in Bohemia : Good Mail Service. In awarding the contract. for a monthly mail service to the Yukon district of Alaska, the Government has provided the means for regular and expeditious communication between that remote region and the outside world, The result of this arrangement will undoubtedly be an immediate and continuous increase of emigration to the Alaska gold fields. The richness of the territory is’ beyond question mining operations already in progress are immensely profitable, and as better facilities of communication are established the value of our whole Alaska possession will undergo an enormous expansion. Circle City, lying almost on the border of the Arctic zone, has a population of more than 1800 persons, whore rapidly creating an American community. Miners are doing well, corner lots sell as high as $2000. each, ~~and it needs only a little wise encouragement and protection on the part of this Governinent to convert the place into a prosperous and stable town. A monthly: mail will contribute largely to that object, and the other elements of growth will speedily follow it. Burroughs Again in Jail, Frank Burroughs, the opium fiend from Grass Valley, was released from the county jail yesterday. He managed to get some morphine and in the evening engaged a room at the New York Hotel. About 12 o'clock last , night Frank Richards, the hotel clerk, heard the sound of breaking glass in the room occupied by Burroughs. He'went up to the room and found the door locked. Burroughs was throwing things through the window and shouting loud. Richards got Sheriff Getchell to go with him and when Burroughs refused to open the door they forced the lock and went in. Burroughs was under the bed and had-an open pocket knife in his hand. The drug had rendered him delirious and caused him to imagine that a host of demons were after him. He was taken to the county jail and examined before being placed in a cell. A small quantity of niorphine was found hidden ‘in his hair, and a needle belonging to the hypodermic syringe was found: in his mouth. The syringe was in one ot his pockets. . ve Too Much For Woodiand. The Woodland Mail of yesterday morning thus pays its respects to a former resident of this city: Carmichael, the blacksmith, got into another fracas Sunday. He became en. gaged in a dispute with a man in Slaven’s saloon and knocked him down, and might have done him serious injury if bystanders had not interfered. This man seems to be of the opinion that the local officers are afraid of him, but if he gives them the chance he wili discover his mistake. If he is brought before a Justice he should be given a “floater” as his presence ‘is becoming decidedly obnoxious to the good citizens of this city: The Picnic. Something like 5000 or more people will picnic at Glenbrook, Park Jun 17th. It’s going to be the boss” event of the season. Every one of the 125 stockholders is working for it. The committees are getting up new ana novel features to fill the day with pleasure and interest. ‘Get your best girl and go early. ENGLISH CHILDREN. to Cadge For Money; son, ta parents’ American idea in my time than that, and I soppose it is still the same sabmitted to the thought without mortification. But here the feeling, or at least the fact, isquite different, A hard working man who lives up to the last penny of a meager can give a half schoolboy son of a friend or acquaintance of his who has $20,000 a year, and the boy will pocket it, and the father will, at the most, look the other way. ] ased to think that this had its explanation in the fact that parents and chil‘dren were not united by so close a bond aere as in America, and that the father cared: less than any American father would care for the dignity and self respect of his son. On the other hand, however, it is certain that the i father holds himself responsible for his son and spends money solicitously in trying to start him in life long past the stage when an Jspopleas youth would 3 expected to go out and shift for him. elf. And, indeed, the older one gets the dlainer it is to be seen that any and ev ‘ry attempt to dogmatize about the dif‘erence between the two peoples of the wo countries must be subject to all sorts f reservations and contradicting modiications. But it is true that the English ‘hild is allowed to cadge for money in 4 way which is unknown to the Ameri‘an child of the same socia) grade, and hat this is by no means confined to velatively poor people. This fact has alWays seemed to me. to rob the English child of a great deal of the interest which with us attaches to childhood.
