Character at One Time. Virginia City Chronicle: William Bird, otherwise known familiarly as *Bill”. Bird, a pioneer Comstocker, died at the County Hospital Thursday. Death resulted from old age and paralysis, he having suffrered from the latter for a-long period. De-. ceased was a barber by trade and for years was a noted character on the Comstock. He came to the coast in early days. and mined on the Yuba river in California. In 1859. he located in Carson and opened a barber-shop there, coming to the Comand put his check in the safe to keep company with no good paper representing about $1,800 that other charming and confidential gentlemen have worked the house for. Next day the check was sent to the bank, and, of course, work was, sent back that Dennett didn’t have acént in the vaults, He had never done any business with the bank whatever,” ‘ Mr, Nolan was taken in ™ fennett in much the same manner thai Caley was victimized. Pig 7o ; Has Been Studying Shorthand. Miss Irene Gregory, who has been in San Francisco for some time past, returned here a few days ago, accompanied by her sister, Mrs. W. R. Coe. This morning the ladies left for Pike City, where Miss Gregory will resume her duties as teacher of the public school there, which opens on Monday next. Mrs, Coe will visit her sister, Mrs, Cassidy. While Miss Gregory was below she pursued the study of shorthand and made such rapid advancement that she hopes soon to be qualified to hold a position as reporter or ‘stenographer. She had been sick about a week, Deceased leaves a husband and six children, the youngest being an infant a few months old, The family came here less than two years-ago.
