BXPBRIENCES AT MANILA.
Greatly Exaggerated.
A private letter dated Manila, January 18th, has just been received from
private Henry M. Calkins, formerly of
this city, who is a member of Company
K, ist California Volunteers. Since
the letter was written the press telegrams have brought news that Mr.
Calkins was wounded in one of the
battles that took place a short time
ago. In the course of his letter he
says:
“By the latest papers, especially in
the Call, I see criminally false reports
about the health of the: soldiers here.
There has not been a death within a
month. The ratio of sickness and
deaths from natural causes among 23,000 soldiers here has not. been any
greater I think than it was in San
Francisco. If a man was out of the
army, where he could select bis own
hours for being out of doors and not
here.
This is the first time I have missed
duty. since coming here.
