Rosenthal will be auctioned off soon. The time of sale will be advertised. Two vagrants who have been serving terms in the county jail were discharged today and officer Kilroy took them to Colfax by the afternoon train. Pennsylvania Engine Company No. 2 holds. its. regular monthly meeting * tonight, and it is desired that every member who can possibly attend will be present. as D.S. Prince of San Francisco has purchased the stock of goods belonging to Casper-Cohn. The store will be closed for a week, when it will be reopened for business. The Nevada City Undertaking Company recently purchased a tract of land on the opposite side of the Red Dog road from Pine Grove cemetery, and will in time open the purchase for burial purposes. Archie Cowell, who has been conducting a chop house in the Tower building on Main street, is removing to the quarters at the junction of Commercial and Main streets formerly occupied by J. Levy, and he will open for business there Saturday night. The trading stamp has gone from Nevada City and a number of dealers who were roped ina year ago to usipg them are now once more glad they are alive. A private letter dated Manila, January 18th, has just been received from private Henry M. Calkins, formerly of this city, who is a member of Company K, ist California Volunteers. Since the letter was written the press telegrams have brought news that Mr. Calkins was wounded in one of the battles that took place a short time ago. In the course of his letter he says: “By the latest papers, especially in the Call, I see criminally false reports about the health of the: soldiers here. There has not been a death within a month. The ratio of sickness and deaths from natural causes among 23,000 soldiers here has not. been any greater I think than it was in San Francisco. If a man was out of the army, where he could select bis own hours for being out of doors and not here. This is the first time I have missed duty. since coming here. “Last Sunday was a religious holiday with the natives and the insurgents flag blessed. This was forbidden, and for four nights up to Sunday night several thousand troops were stationed on the outposts and every soldier im Manila, includiug oftticers, was held in barracks under arms.
