would be disowned by his people during the Henley superintendency for supporting the
Federal Government's Indian removal policy. 1°?
In the spring of 1854, while the Federal Government was considering the annual
amount -of money to be appropriated for Indian affairs in California, Superintendent
Beale's accounts were discovered to be nearly $250,000.00 in error. As a result, Beale
was replaced in office by Thomas Henley, federal appropriations for the development of
the California reservation system were cut down to $125,000.00 per year, and the nun; ber of Indian reservations scheduled to be developed was cut back from five to toree, °°
Many Nisenan tribes, who were in acute need of material compensation for
J the immigrants' continued violation of their property and civil rights, had been
abandoned by the Federal Government during Beale's superintendency. Some Nisenan
would receive no help at all.
