HAULED IN THEIR HORNS
It'seems that the men who have been
fighting the Republican party during
its entire existence upon the ground
that its tariff policy was not a proper
one are now conceding that it is, and
hasbeen from the first, right. Four
frenzied appeals to-the people as
against the Republican party have
been, issued during the present month,
that-of ex-Candidate Bryan, followed.
by those of the three party leaders who
are striving to nnite the elements of
national discord in his support, yet
not one of them mentions as an argument against the Republicans . this
great subject which has been its leading principle and which today shares
in ite estimation an equal honor with
sound mopey, Since these men now
admit by. their silence that the Republican party ever since its existence has
been right in its fight for this great
principle of protection and that they
have been wrong in their fight against it
is it not possible that the views of its
Jeaders on the money question are
entitled to some consideration as
against those of the men who thus admit the unsoundness of their views on
an equality important subject in the
Ir 1s about four years since the silver
people trotted out those awe-inspiring
and delusive tables claiming to show
thatthe price of wheat keeps pace with
the price of silver. Wheat was then
worth 543; cents a bushel in New York
markets and silver was worth 65. cents
an ounce. Silver is now worth 55%,
cents an ounce and wheat last week was
$1.087;. Thus the four years’ practical
test of these tables has given results
precisely the reverse of the showing
made by them, since silver has fallen
fifteen per cent. meantime, while
wheat has nearly doubled.

‘“*S Duel In the Snow.”
[. .th ere wearing the masquerading cos.

There is every reason to. believe, from
recently disclosed, information by M.
Alfred Darimon, that in portraying on
canvas that impressive episode the
ertist was not influenced.by solely. im:ginative caprice, but that he has reprofuced a scene in real life. —
The facts are as follows: The duelists
were M. Jules Brame, a former minister of public instruction under the second empire, and M. D. D., a well
known journalist on the staff of one of
the most influential newspapers in the
north of France. When the duel oconrred, both were studying the bar.
One Shrove Tuesday they, in company
with friends, bad repaired to a rpstauenjoying a good dinner and afterward
of going to the masquerade ball at the
Opera. They all ‘agreed to go as Pierrots. As they all wore masks some one
suggested that they should adopt some
distinctive sign by which they could
recognize one another in the crowd. D.
D. suggested that they should pin a Iabel bearing a number to their backs.
The idea-was unanimously adopted, and
D. D. prepared the Jabels posardingly.
While so doing.a diabolical idea came
into his head. Itwas carnival time.
Why should he not have _his little. joke?
When it was Jules Brame’s turn to
have a ticket pinned to his back, his
friend D. D. had written in large letters
beneath the number, “I am Jules

set foot in the main passage. to the premiere galerie than~he was followed bya
lady wearing a mask, who, op his preparing to enter a private box, oried ont,
“J wish you success, Jules Brame.’’
Later on, on re-entering the passage, he
was surrounded by a group of masquer-aders, who with one voice shouted out,
“‘Good day, my dear Brame.” That
proved to him that he was known to
every one, although he was puzzled to
understand how it could be.
Passing in front of a box opener, the
girl burst out laughing. He inquired
angrily what she was laughing at.
at the funny idea which led you to pin

on it.’’ And, suiting the action to the
word, she unpinned the label and handed it to him.
only in bad taste, but insulting. He
sought out his comrade, and, finding
him in the saloon, he reproached him
angrily in the hearing of the crowd, insisting that he should apologize openly
shen and there, D. D., resenting his
friend’s attitude towatd him, declined
to apologize. A duel therefore, in accordance with French habits and cus.oms, was inevitable. Seconds were at

wtagonists started for the Bois de’
Boulogne. Fortunately the duel did not

Gerome’s picture, for, although Brame
Tue Labor Commissioner .of New

that the price of farm lands in that
State has depreciated very largely in
the past five or six years, and says thai
many of the reports of his correspondents indicate that prices have fallen
from fifty to seventy-five per cent. in
that period. This fall in value, it will
be observed, is coincident with—nof
the “crime of '73,” which occurred 2&
years ago, but the “crime of 92,” by
which the people elected a free-trade
President and free-trade Congress.
Tue author of “Quo Vadis” has re“ turned to his European: home from a
brief tour in this country, and that he

the héad-is shown by the silly stories
he is telling of how the American women fell at his feet and worshipped
him. One of his most idiotic attempts
in this direction js the narration’ of
how one society. woman on whom he
called asked him to let her hold his
hands during his stay in her drawingroom.
