In the meantime District Attorney
Forbes took three or four friends into
his confidence and they hegan ‘‘setting
a back-fire’”’ by circulating the report
that he was getting out a warrant for
Lane’s arrest on a charge of being a
party to interfere with the mandates
of Judge Keyser’s court. This set to
boiling the town, which had before
been simmering. Forbes next strolled
down street and pretty soon met Lane
as if by accident. Lane had heard the
yarn set afloat by Forbes.
“My God, Forbes,”’ exclaimed Lane
rushing up to the official, ‘what’s
this story about your wanting to have
me arrested ?”’ °
‘°Tain’t my doing, Henry,’’ said
Forbes sadly, ‘‘but you must take the
chances when you come down on business of this kind.”’ :
“Why, it’s all a joke,’’ said Henry.

thing under Keyser’s instructions.”

This organization differs from the
Relief Corps in that only those connected by ties of kindred to the
soldiers, sailors or marines are eligible to membership. To all such I appeal. Mothers, wives, sisters, daughters—all who venerate the deeds of
the loved ones that left home and
friends to share the toils, dangers and
hardships of the great army that
saved our country from division, come
and_unite with us. Organized work
is more effectual than individual effort. There is need of this society.

As Saturnian Jove towers above the
other Gods of Olympus, so does Voorhees physically stand among his fellows. Standing 6 feet 4 inches tall,
with a voice like the rolling of thunder,
his mere presence would command
attention even though he did not
stand out as one of the mental giants
of the Senate. He was born in Fountain county, Indiana, September 26th,
1828, and received a classical education, graduating in 1849 from the
Asbury University of Indiana. He
studied law and was called to the bar
in 1851. During this year he ran,
as Democrat, for Congress, but was
defeated. In 1858 he was made
United’ States District Attorney by
President Buchanan. During 1859 he
defeated John E, Cook, one of the
raiders in John Brown’s expedition.
Voorhees was sent to the Thirty
seventh, Thirty-eight and Thirty-ninth
Congress, but was defeated for the
fortieth Congress. He was reseated
in the -Forty-first assembly of that
body and re-elected for the Fortysecond. In 1873 he was chosen United
States Senator for Indiana and was
a trip-hammer, ¢rushing everything
poses to be revenged for the accusation which Mr. Rowe indignately rebe found to print the. counter-charges ,
against the Providence folks.
The following from the editorial columns of Monday’s San Francisco
Chronicle indicates that Mr. Rowe and
at least a portion of his fellow-members thought they knew more about
the law of libel_than the TRANSCRIPT
editor did:

“We have received a) communication putporting to emanate from the

containing charges of so grave & nature against citizens of Nevada county
that we must postively decline to publish them in the absence of proof to

literally true they are grossly libelous,
and they who sent them to us certainly cannot expect us to invite a libel

the local papers there decline to present the story as well as us, and we
